MacBook Pro Display Issue

I’ve been having a problem with my 2019 MacBook Pro where the screen would randomly go black with vertical lines. After restarting, the screen would work again for a while and eventually the same thing would happen again. Recently it worked for about two weeks which is the longest it’s gone without issue. Any advice on what could be causing this?

Hi there darrendh_,

Let's begin by resetting the SMC and NVRAM on your Mac to see if that helps with the vertical lines you're seeing on the screen. Learn how from the support articles below:

Vertical lines correlate very strongly with issues in the display itself.

As a work-around for your display issue, you could connect your MacBook Pro to an external display or TV set. On MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar, a display adapter would likely be needed.

To get ready for service, you MUST have a Trusted, disk- based backup of all your files on hand. Many service procedures end up replacing the boot drive along with other components, and if that happens, you files will not be returned to you.

Time Machine software is already included in MacOS, and is ready to make and maintain such backups for you. All you need to provide is an external drive on which to store the copies of the files.
