Touch ID not always available

I love the touch ID feature to give me a quick login after Sleep. But after a while (several days and multiple sleeps) the logon screen no longer offers me the Touch ID option - I have to use my password every time. I need to restart to restore logon Touch ID.

Is this a known bug, or is there an option to change this behaviour?

I'm still on OS 12.0.1.

Apps are updated from the AppStore as well as the major macOS versions but the operating system updates are in System Preferences -> Software Updates. Recommended to click the Advanced button and check everything. Major releases will be advertised with an Upgrade button under Software Updates but also in the App Store. But the dot version releases are only in Software Update. If you enable everything you will see notifications when they install and will be asked to restart if necessary.

Follow advise from Previous posting first.

IMHO the Automatic Software Update Applet is iffy at best and has been that way since the inception of Big Sur.

Sometimes it is necessary to take alternate methods including restarting in Safe Mode and attempting the Software Update Applet.

The list is rather long so the short method.

Again in Safe Mode and Apple Apps Store and download the latest Available Full Version.

I'm still on OS 12.0.1.

Please note:

There are a few instances where Touch ID will not be accepted by macOS:

• If you restarted your Mac, or if you're not logged into your user account.

• If you have not unlocked your Mac for 48 hours.

• If you are trying to unlock Security & Privacy

• If you are trying to unlock Users & Groups Preferences (when FileVault is on)

• If 5 wrong fingerprint attempts

Most definitely update macOS! You are several updates behind. Not only do these dot release versions fix many bugs but they also close security vulnerabilities. You should install 12.2.1 which will catch you up.

macOS 12.0.1 is from October 2021

macOS 12.1 is from December 2021

macOS 12.2 is from January 2022

macOS 12.2.1 is from February 2022

macOS 12.3 is coming soon.

Thanks for that info. I was surprised to see that I haven't had an update since October, that's why I mentioned it. I'm not getting notifications about new updates, nor can I easily find at the App Store whether there is one or not. On past OS versions I always got notified about updates. Is there an option somewhere to turn this feature back on? And where in the app store do I find the updates - I can only find a full load - or is that the same thing?
