From time-to-time, when I have a couple of unread emails and I select an email to read, it will open and then quickly display an email from weeks or months ago. Then when I select back, it is only showing old emails. I click the show unread emails filter button twice and they all appear normal again. It’s a bug that has been about for about 12 months and I’m using an iPhone X, software always up to date.

Since you continue to notice this after checking your connection, Restart the iPhone.
If you can't receive email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support try this article and steps.
Restart the iPhone and check if this only happens with email account.
Contact Apple Support if this continues.

We see that your iPhone is showing only old emails when you select an email to read. Have you tried changing the settings for mail using the steps in Check your email in Mail on iPhone?

I tried that, but it doesn’t cover my issue.
I grabbed some screencaps just now:
the first is the screen from when the issue happened (showing old emails),
second is when I hit the unread filter, third is after I hit the unread filter again.
