Does opening an unread message change the date of conversation?

Hello,

before coming here I've tried googling, but nothing matched my issue.

A friend messaged me on Saturday, but I haven't read the message until Sunday. No other texts were exchanged since their last Saturday's message, but in the iMessage list of conversations, the date says Sunday (the day I read it.)

Does this mean that the date of the conversation is affected by read receipts? (We both have them on)

Thank you in advance for your answer.

It is not affected by read receipts, it is affected by the date/time you opened it. Just like if you were to open an email. If it was configured for read receipts it would show the date you opened it. Messages on the iPhone for read receipts are not configured for everyone, but the time of the message is going to be based on your open, or at least the last message in the thread.
