iPad unavailable, device timed out when trying to extend display on Mac OS Monterey

Trying to use the simple function of extending the display from an M1 Max Macbook Pro running Mac OS Monterey to an M1 iPad Pro running iPadOS 15 and constantly getting iPad unavailable, device timed out error. Have tried the following:

  • rebooting each device (obviously)
  • making sure each device is signed into the same iCloud account
  • resetting location and privacy settings on iPad
  • ensuring handoff on both devices is on
  • ensuring handoff on both devices is off
  • removing obselete iCloud devices


This feature simply won't work on $6k worth of equipment. Really don't want to have to reinstall everything as new because...why should I? They were both set up from new.


Is there anything else I can try before booking a "genius" appointment..

You've tried some good steps already. This page's "Additional requirements" section helps to detail some further items to check on: Use an iPad as a second display for a Mac


We've also listed them here:

•Both devices must be signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication. Sidecar does not support Managed Apple IDs.
•To use Sidecar wirelessly, both devices must be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other and have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on. Your iPad must not be sharing its cellular connection and your Mac must not be sharing its internet connection.
•To use Sidecar over USB, your iPad must be set to trust your Mac.


It may help to see if things work well when hardwiring the iPad to the Mac. For issues when using it wirelessly, you may try checking out the suggestions here to help rule out interference: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference
