Encode selected video files - to what format?

Hi - I am using an old Mac Book Pro with an older version of Quick Time on High Sierra to convert .mov files so I can view them on new Mac with Big Sur.

I have hundreds of .mov files to convert...

I found a thread saying that files could be converted in batched using 'Encode selected video files', but to what format shall I convert so I can view them on current version of Quick Time? Option I have are: 480p, 720p, 1080p, Audio Only, Apple ProRes - although I tried that last one and it did not work.

Thanks in advance.

Hi mme_lafayette,

Good question! It looks like this guide will provide you with Export movies to other file formats and resolutions using QuickTime Player on Mac. This page will show you both how to convert the files, along with how to along with showing the resolutions appropriate for movies based on commonly used video sizes. "The exact resolution and data rate of an exported movie depend on the original."

- 4K: QuickTime movie using H.264 or HEVC (H.265), up to 3840 x 2160 resolution.
- 1080p: QuickTime movie using H.264 or HEVC (H.265), up to 1920 x 1080 resolution.
- 720p: QuickTime movie using H.264, up to 1280 x 720 resolution.
- 480p: QuickTime movie using H.264, up to 640 x 480 resolution.
Choose this option if you are exporting a movie to post online (for example, to YouTube).
- Audio Only: An Apple MPEG 4 audio file with an AAC audio track.

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!
