Can't view Mail Inbox via Time Machine

I've just changed from a mid-2010 iMac to a new 24" M1 iMac. At some point in the past it was possible to view my Mail Inbox, go into Time machine, and view my Inbox at each of the recorded back-ups. With my new iMac, I can only view the desktop in Time machine. Is this how it should be? It seems a huge reduction in useful function. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

iMac 24″, macOS 12.2

That is how Time Machine works now. If you have feedback for Apple, please post at Apple.com/feedback.

Mail is no longer supported as in the past starting with Catalina and does not even show with Monterey. For ease you would have to have a third party app to easily retrieve a deleted email.
