Universal Control: Display Preferences keeps resetting iPad position

Setup: I have an LG ultrawide display, my MacBook Air 2020 M1 (primary display), and a 4th Gen iPad Air.

Here is how they are physically organized:

In System Preferences > Displays, I try to put the iPad to the left of the MacBook Air, and it keeps putting it UNDER and TO THE LEFT of the MacBook Air.

I drop it here:

And after about two seconds, it repositions it here:

I understand it probably can't be both touching the LG display AND the MacBook Air at the same time, so I give it a little gap between the LG display to make it obvious that the iPad is to the left of the MacBook Air.

Basically, it will only accept a position to the LEFT or RIGHT of the LG display, or somewhere along the BOTTOM of the MacBook Air's display.

Anyone else with this issue? I've tried tweaking the various settings in Universal Control to no avail, tried restarting, all the usual suspects.

Hey there Rob Hulson,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities!

From what you've described, it seems like this might be expected behavior based on the following info:

"Arrange your displays

Arrange your displays to adjust where your devices think they are positioned relative to the others. You can then move the cursor more precisely in the direction of each display.

  1. On your primary Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Displays. The preferences window shows an image representing each device's display.
  2. Drag the image of your iPad or other Mac into position relative to the other displays: to their left, to their right, or below them. A Mac display can also be positioned above other displays."

This is found in Universal Control: Use a single keyboard and mouse between Mac and iPad. We'd also suggest going through the rest of this guide for tips and suggestions. If this doesn't help please let us know.

Kind regards.
