Changing Apple ID from mine to kids

Hello,

My kids have been using iPads for years with my Apple ID. Now that they are older I would like to have their iPads on their Apple ID to go with their phones. But will they loss everything they have on their iPads from the last several years? I’m tired of having all their stuff on my iPad and can not stop the handoff from the different device’s.

Thank you!

iPad Air, iPadOS 15

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. If possible, also set up Family Sharing  between the IDs to keep access to your apps/purchases.

Hi Itsabeautifulday74,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! It is not possible to merge Apple ID’s. The apps that were previously downloaded to your Apple ID remain with that Apple ID. You can however re-download/purchase those apps using their new Apple ID. You can also set up Family Sharing. The following resource has great information, specifically the section "Help your family member create an Apple ID, then set up Family Sharing" that may help:

Make sure that each family member has a unique Apple ID

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.
