Why verification on opening app on osx

Often when I open, for exemple, Excel a verification is started that take a lot of time before the app is active.

Why?

It is possible to avoid this verification?

When MS Office updater updates and an app should immediately verify in the background so that when you go to use the app, it opens as quickly the 2nd time after the app has been verified. Verifying Application.app What is happening when a non-Apple app is opened and a status bar comes up that says "Verifying ‘xxx.app‘ " before the app opens? And what happens if I close the status bar window before it finishes verifying? Will the app not open? (I haven't tried this) I assume there's some security verification process going on, since it has the Security & Privacy icon in that status bar window, but I'd like to know more about it. Seems to happen only after a restart, but happens with the same apps repeatedly (MS office, Adobe CC apps).

That is a security feature. The entire app has to be scanned to ensure it hasn't been tampered with. This can be a problem for apps that are frequently auto-updated like Microsoft Office. The problem is worse if you have an older computer with a slow, mechanical hard drive.
