Monterey 12.3.1 External Monitor/Display Issue - No Longer Outputting Signal

After updating my Mac Mini today to 12.3, my monitor now no longer displays an image via USB-C, just keeps saying on no signal on the monitor.

I have tried HDMI and same issue. The odd occasion it will display a picture but once I shutdown or restart the mac mini it does not display a picture. The mac is booting up. I have had to resort to connecting it to my old TV with HDMI connection.

This is so frustrating

I have tried resetting the SMC which had not appeared to work, also tried downgrading the displayport version from 1.4 to 1.2 (on the odd occasion I did get a picture) but that has not worked either.

Has anyone else having this issue?

The monitor I use is a BenQ SW270C.

This is really doing my head in and was wondering if anyone else has got a fix to this.

Apple - you have purposefully made this as hard f*****g possible to remediate because, unlike Windows, you are so arrogant in your OS updates (that you clearly do not QA at all), that you offer no downgrade option. ALL - this is the definitive solution that I employed THREE (3) WEEKS prior and I have not had ANY issues since then,

  1. Backup your entire SSD via direct connected Time Machine. If you are like me with a large SSD, congrats, APPLE FORCED YOU TOO, to spend $500+ on on an Samsung 4TB external SSD (link) where you can use this USB-C to SATA connector (link) - all regular links to US Amazon; sadly, I have no referral code/links.
  2. Download version 12.1 from this site (link)
  3. Create a bootable install USB key (link)
  4. Boot into safe or recovery mode and re-partition your entire SSD (this wipes the entire computer FYI, but is the ONLY OPTION APPLE has made available at all...)
    1. FYI - at this point I recommend that you just hardware your laptop into your router or switch and bypass Wi-Fi; its faster and easier.
  5. Set up the "new laptop" as fast a possible; your going to wipe the entire "new"/"temp" user anyway.
  6. Restore Mac from Time Machine backup (link) - delete that temporary user from the prior step; wait like 4 hours maybe (that's about how long my 3.4TB SSD restore took.
  7. No more issues. For weeks, blissfully easy use once again.

** Apple, you owe me 20+ lost billable hours or work, at least many hours in lost work, and over $500 for having to purchase equipment only need to remedy your insane f*** u*; congratulations, QA and OS teams - those I doubt you were the ones who made the decision to focus on continually increasing levels of completely dumbs**t; but at least we have a **** ANIMOJI...might as well be your new logo.

Please call Apple, ask for a senior adviser and then report the problem. This is the only way we are going to get this fixed. We don't have the option of downgrading to Big Sur because this is a brand new computer that came with the DEFECTIVE Monterey iOS installed. We just spent another 1/2 hour on hold with Apple to find this out. So, we are totally screwed and my paralegal cannot even see to work on the tiny laptop. The senior advisor I spoke with told me that he had never heard of this issue and so did the initial person who answered the call.

Please also go to the top of this thread and click the box under cyeoman06's original post "I have this question too." The more people we have call and click this box, the more attention it will receive.

COME ON, APPLE. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER AND FIX THIS.

Was having same issue. Macbook pro 12.3.1 with LG monitor.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions - which i tried.

I tried the unplugging it and cable as suggested - didn't make difference.

I tried the Reset on the monitor - didn't make difference

But then i just unplugged the cable from macbook to monitor again and it worked. So i would suggest trying what i did and if you don't see it right away, try the cables again etc. Might work.

The problem with a factory reset is that you need an image to actually get into the menu (at least on my monitor).

I've tried everything: Unplug while running, unplug while not running, leave it unplugged for a while, plug in while running, turn on before switching on the Mac Mini, turn on once there's an image on the main monitor,... - nothing helped, apart from using the official adapter. And please, don't spend money on that adapter, call support, so they can send it to you to test (if you haven't yet, of course) - maybe that'll make them more interested in this problem.

This is the exact same system kernel panic, 1-2 seconds frozen, then pink screen flash, and crash that we had to deal with when the M1Pro and M1Max chipset systems launched. It plagued my 16" MBP multiple times PER DAY.

I upgraded earlier today, and within a few hours; the entire system has kernel panic diseased code that was fixed many releases ago; and somehow its back.

APPLE; I want to downgrade the OS back to the previous release IMMEDIATELY; this is so embarrassing for you. What, like two lines of patch notes for 12.3.1, that just crashes the core processes; you brought back the kernel panic issue; like how does this make it out of QA??

I don't know if it helps:

Configuration Mac Mini M1 2020 with Monitor 2007, DELL E228WFP which believing being the problem, replaced it with a just refurbished one of the same type and then realising that 12.3 caused the for weeks unsolvable problem also on the refurbished Monitor.

I used the the DE-15/HD-15 VGA/SVGA socket on my old-timer and an apple adapter.

Option 1: I changed to the DVI Video socket on the monitor, using a 9 usd adapter bought on the Internet and since then it works again (about one month)

Option 2: join the beta community and you will get 12.4 which may or may not solve the problem for your wait until the update comes as the final version. ( I am not a computer nerd at all)

Patience and good luck.

What cables/adapters are you using to connect you monitors?

Did you already ask them to send you the official USB-C AV multiport adapter to try (for free, of course)? It's an HDMI->USB-C adapter and no idea why but my second monitor works with that one, even though it requires converter cables to connect both of my monitors if I'm using it, so it's only a temporary fix for me while I'm still waiting for them to fix this, so I can finally use my regular adapter with just regular cables again.

Hi - My external monitor Dell P2217H stopped working. I thought it was monitor issue, and went and bought new Samsung 'curved' display, since the Dell was from 2016..(found an excuse to get a new one). The New monitor a Samsung CRG5 (LC24RG50FQNXZA) started flickering as well. So I had to return it. Apple has to fix the external monitor issue.

Jun 7, 2022 4:34 PM in response to cyeoman06

Hi,

I was able to get it to work with my old monitor. I got the clue from this email thread. Instead of connecting the HDMI cable from the external Display into HDMI interface of my Dongle (it is multi-purpose - SD Card reader, USB Port, Network Port, Power), I got a new HDMI - USB-C cable from Amazon. I connected it directly from External Dell HDMI display to one of the USB Ports of MAC. Again this is a new HDMI -> USB-C cable, not the old HDMI -> HDMI cable. The Mac OS is Monterey 12.4. So it is now working in Extended Display mode. Hope someone will find help with this information. B083Z8QBJ5

I have this same issue. I'm on 12.3.1 and my LG ultrawide monitor stopped being detected. I sent it to LG and they said there was nothing wrong with the monitor. I use it for my work as a software engineer and find this extremely frustrating because my job locks my laptop if it's not on the latest macOS version, for security reasons. Apple needs to put an update to fix this.

Jun 18, 2022 10:12 AM in response to emmanuel-0_0

@emmanuel-0_0, the most current version is 12.4 and includes fixes for the monitor issue. I had to reset my second display to factory settings and after that it has worked normally. Because it was not working I could not access the menu until I connected it to an older MacBook on Catalina I have laying around. Once connected, I reset to factory and works great now. If you can reset your monitor and update to 12.4 you might have better luck.
