Hi panda2184,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

Try starting into safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

"Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again."

This will clear cache and let us know if any third-party programs may be interfering with performance.

If all seems to work as expected in safe mode, start up normally and test again.

Let us know what happens.

Have a fantastic day!

panda2184,

If your Mac shipped with an earlier macOS version, and you have a Time Machine backup created while Big Sur was installed, you should be able to revert.

"Important: Reverting erases any changes you made to the files on your Mac since you installed the new version of macOS. To save new or revised files, copy them onto a different disk or back them up before you follow these instructions.

  1. Print these instructions.
  2. Click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
  3. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Restart. After your Mac restarts (some Mac computers play a startup sound), press and hold the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears, then release the keys.
  4. Select Restore from a Time Machine Backup, then click Continue.
  5. Select your Time Machine backup disk.
  6. Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. To restore your computer to the state it was in before you installed the new version of macOS, choose the most recent backup that occurred before you installed the new version.
  7. Follow the onscreen instructions."

Check out Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version for more details.

If you'd like to continue attempting to isolate what's causing the performance issues while you're on Monterey, Activity Monitor may provide some helpful details to work on a solution.

  • "In the Activity Monitor app  on your Mac, click Memory (or use the Touch Bar).
  • The Memory Pressure graph lets you know if your computer is using memory efficiently.
    • Green memory pressure: Your computer is using all of its RAM efficiently.
    • Yellow memory pressure: Your computer might eventually need more RAM.
    • Red memory pressure: Your computer needs more RAM.
  • If memory pressure is yellow, red, or has spikes, check to see if an app is using up memory and causing the memory pressure to increase. If you no longer need to have the app running, you should quit the app.
  • Your computer’s memory pressure is accurately measured by examining the amount of free memory available, the swap rate, and the amount of wired and file cached memory to determine if your computer is using RAM efficiently."

This information is outlined in Check if your Mac needs more RAM in Activity Monitor

Regards.

panda2184,

If you have a backup and you'd like to return to the previous macOS version, you should be able to do so with the steps in the post above.

We're happy to see how we can help if you want to remain on macOS Monterey as well. If you'd like to continue troubleshooting, let us know what you find in Activity Monitor, and we'll go from there.

Kind regards.
