I am having trouble connecting my new Mac mini to my existing iMac. Using a thunderbolt 2 cable with thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 converter. My iMac is a 27inch late 2012 mode, running macOS Sierra version 10.12.6

There are ZERO workarounds, ZERO adapters or magic wands that can make it work, period!
Do yourself a favor a quit wasting time on the impossible and simply sell the iMac and put the money toward a new display.
I have a late 2013 27" iMac and can verify that it is an impossible task.
I thought all new Mac mini’s supported target display mode? Isn’t only the iMac you are connecting too that has to be an earlier model? Which mine is?

there’s absolutely nothing at all I can do to get it to work as a second or main display for my new Mac mini?
how is it that the Mac mini is able to work with other older model iMacs as a second display then?

Have ordered a Luna Display from Astropad as they have confirmed this will let me use my existing iMac as a primary or secondary display, I will report back once it arrives but sounds like it’s going to work great, I’d suggest that to others in same position.
LUNA display works perfectly, highly recommended for anyone in this situation.
