Safari bookmarks change in order of registration change after rearrangement. Do you know a fix?

I have the impression that this has been occurring since the update to iOS/iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3.

When a new Safari bookmark is inserted in the middle of an existing bookmark group or the position of an existing bookmark is changed, the added or repositioned bookmark will come to the top by itself after some time has passed. If you rearrange them again, they will always be rearranged in the order in which they were registered or changed. However, the position of existing bookmarks that have not been changed will not change.

Whether or not this is due to syncing iOS/iPadOS/macOS devices via iCloud is unknown, but the result is the same no matter which device is used to make the change.

This is a workaround for now.

Insert Z between DE of bookmarks (either alone or in a bookmark folder) that are aligned ABCDE,

ABCDZE

After a while, it will take its own course and the order changes to

ZABCDE

Even if I move Z and change it back to ABCDZE, it goes back to ZABCDE by itself again.

I've done it many times and it's the same.

If ABCD is moved in front of Z, ABCDZE can be maintained.

The same is true for the folder position of bookmarks, whether they are individual bookmarks or bookmarks grouped in folders.

Safari on macOS has a choice of bookmark sort order, "by date" or "by name", but neither is checked.

Does anyone know of a permanent solution?

Thank you for many replies and responses.

I did a workaround and it looks, so far, working good. I hope this lasts long.

1 I made a backup copy of Safari Bookmarks on my Mac through the Safari’s menu: file > export > Bookmarks.

2 I disabled all the Safari iCloud sync on all the devices without retaining any local bookmarks; Mac, iPads, iPhone, iPod. I believe the bookmarks on iCloud too was cleared/cleaned.

3 I restored manually the bookmarks on the Mac applying the backup copy.

4 I resynced all the devices.

All the OSs are up to date.
