Mac Studio and External Drive

I have the new Mac Studio, released yesterday. I have an external hard drive connected by cable for Time Machine backups.

Everything works fine until the Studio SSD goes to sleep when not in use. Then, when Studio wakes up again, a message is displayed saying the the "external drive name" wasn't ejected properly. The drive is not shown on the desktop but after a few seconds it reappears. Of course the external drive was never ejected - simply the Studio drive stopped seeing it when it went into sleep mode. I am confident in saying this didn't happen with my old iMac.

A chat with Apple Support this evening suggested preventing the hard drive from going to sleep, but that seems like a poor workaround which isn't good for Apple's green credentials or my wallet.

I suspect this is an OS bug but wonder if anyone has any other thoughts?

This has been an increasing problem with some Bus Powered drives that do not react gracefully to the Mac dropping power during sleep.

Doing this helps Apple meet their Energy-Star requirements, so I do not expect this to change.

If it is a problem for you, you can use a different drive that tolerates power drops more gracefully, or provide an external power supply to the drive you have.

Yeah I'm hoping to set up a server (old cheese grater) in a back room for backup. I don't think my spinners spin up every time I copy a file, though. I have heard the more stuff you have hanging off the bus the more a computer has to reckon with.

Let us know how it goes when you move the spinners off the machine.

My main problem has been getting the Studio Ultra to sleep - and stay asleep.

I have some down time coming up soon so maybe I can finally find time to get the old Mac working as the server.

I'm still very pleased with my Studio Ultra. There are many things I just couldn't do with the old Mac's that this machine handles without breaking a sweat.

Cool stuff!!!

My only concern is how Time Machine seems to back up the whole file set each time. I seem to be filling 12TB drives too quickly - so I might try to find another backup solution other than Time Machine - all the while considering whether backing up the whole file set is a good idea or not. I love the convenience of it - but when recording big audio (sometimes at 88.2 - sometimes with 100+ tracks per session that each contain multiple takes) Pro Tools Ultimate projects get big fast.

Due to time restraints (I also own an organic blueberry farm) I'll probably just stick with T Machine - but I'm drowning in hard drives.

That is NOT the metric you should be watching. Once the initial large backup is completed, Time machine stores only changed files.

Because it stores changed files as well as retaining the originals, its BIG TRICK (and the source of its name) is that it can return files as of any date that it still has on file.

This is the rules it uses for retention:

all others are "consolidated" from time to time, and especially when space is getting tight.

NB>> do not obsess on the remaining free space! There is no benefit to you of having extra vacant space on your backup drive.
