DV device isn't recognized in iMovie at Last version OS

You can re-install Big Sur on your Mac fairly easily without removing Monterey.

Create a new partition (volume) on your Mac using Disk Utility and install Big Sur on that.

You then open your Mac using the new partition.

Eventually if you want to remove the new partition . . .

Add, delete or erase APFS volumes in Disk Utility on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

Creating a new partition takes only a minute or so . . . installing Big Sur will take longer of course.

Back up any important data first.

Good news: Today, I updated my MacBook to MacOS 12.4. I've tested capturing old DV tapes in iMovie (my iMovie version is 10.3.2) and my DV camera (Canon MV700) was recognized, and appeared again in the left hand menu. It all worked again flawlessly like it used to!

Reports are that the update to Monterey 12.4 has cured the camera non-recognition issue.

I have been using iMovie 10.3.1 on a 2015 13" MacBook Pro to import DV footage from a Sony DCR-PC9 with no problems (4 pin to 6 pin FireWire cable > Elago FireWire 400 to 800 adapter > Apple FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter > Mac) using Big Sur. As soon as I updated to Monterey, I can confirm the camcorder no longer displays in iMovie's import window. However, in System Information the camcorder is still successfully identified.

Using another Mac (a 2020 13" MacBook Pro) running Big Sur, I can still see and import the footage in the SAME release of iMove, 10.3.1 (this time with adding the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter to the end of that already hilarious adapter snake). It really does seem to be a specific part of Monterey that broke some DV equipment being recognized by apps.

I had even played around on Big Sur and used the same camcorder as a webcam in Zoom with no issue and can confirm Monterey broke that as well. Given the system is having no issue seeing the full device tree, I hope a simple update can fix this for those of us with legacy creative workflows.

P.S. Because of this issue, I had to run my last import on a 2005 12" PowerBook G4 in Final Cut Express and transfer it over with a CF card — I kid you not!

Exact same positive outcome for me with Sony HDR Z1U . It is now recognized on IMovie with Monterey 12.4

Someone is listening at Apple and I am glad to be on my M1 Mini again.

Those who were predicting that it was not going to change for such a small number of users who are still with "old tape" camera and players like my U-Matic 3/4 inch tapes, that format was the first portable cassette used in the field, the assistant-cameraman/soundman was carrying the portable VCR and controlling the sound. And then Sony lost the battle with JVC for domestic cassettes and recycle the Beta format cassette tapes for VTR directly on the back of the camera. I am old and I worked in those days as a soundman. 1975 to 1980 or so.

If your device isn't listed in the compatibility list, you may want to reach out to the manufacturer and confirm if the device is compatible, or if an update is needed for this functionality from them.

As for reverting to a previous macOS version, do you have a Time Machine backup from before you updated?

Let us know, and we'll go from there.

I'm having the same problem -- known-good setup not working on M1 and Intel iMacs running 12.3.x. Weirdly, it worked on the Intel iMac for a couple of days, then stopped. ffmpeg direct capture not working either. Device shows up in Firewire tree.

You might find it helpful to view this You Tube video that proposes some solutions or at least some diagnostic procedures. I have never tried them myself because I don't run Monterey. However, might be worth a look.

I have the same problem now myself and as it was said in previous post, it was working last version on my M1 Mac mini.

I have checked with my old Mac Pro tower and the camera works fine. So it not my camera or my firewire line, it is suddenly not recognized anymore. I lost an entire day checking and trying.

Same issue here with a Sony camcorder, it was working earlier with the previous version. The camcorder appears in the firewire tree

yes i can confirm this as well- since the new update in imovie it is no longer reading DV- I have a brand new macbookpro as well- can we get this function back?

Same exact issues as jackmckenzie5 with upgrading to latest Monterey. Have an older iMac where FireWire adapters work however audio buffers too much to be useful. I’ll check to so if additional memory might help. Otherwise I am stuck until Apple has a software fix.
