How noisy is the Mac Studio M1 Max?

The Mac Studio is a small computer with much CPU power. Some people say it's silent, others have complaints that it's too noisy. It seems that the Ultra is more silent because of the better cooling system. I have read that the fans run at 1325 rpm idle which is rather fast. What are the impressions of someone who bought the Mac Studio Max? (not the Ultra)

M1 Max. While much quieter than the large windows machine it is replacing I am very disappointed that the fan is always running. When I'm doing low power tasks such as browsing the web shouldn't the system use the low-power cores and be silent? My M1 Air seems fine with that. Hopefully Apple will address this with an update.

I ordered an M1 Max Studio and immediately returned it. The fan noise was unbearable to me. By default, the fans are running around 1300 rpm, but even at 1100 rpm with the mac fan control app the noise was way too much. This device is support to be on your desk and therefore fan noise is a no-go. I switched to the Mac Mini M1, which is 100% quiet, so I am totally happy now. No Mac Studio for me.

What is the voltage of your electrical outlet?

We have 230V here in Holland (EU). There are two problems: one is the noise of the air through the holes, and the other is a high pitches whine from the fans themselves. I don't understand this, my M1 iMac, Mac Mini and MBP are completely silent. This is a huge design flaw in the new Mac Studio, I am very disappointed and think the Apple Engineers must come up with a modification in new future models.

Maybe I am slightly deaf? I have have the Mac Studio M1 Max for about a week now. I have a video file that I ran on my old iMac Late 2012 to test the download speeds using Final Cut Pro. My iMac took about 25 minutes, and I could hear the fans spool up. The Studio did it in just over 10 minutes, and I did not hear a peep out of it. So I don't know what to say. Either I am hard of hearing, or maybe not as sensitive to fan noise as others. Seems totally quiet to me.

No your not deaf you are focusing on the fan noise and not all max studios are effected. But the people who are complaining are complaining about the high pitched noise emitting out of the make studio not fan noise. It’s debated that either the power supply or the fans make the high pitched noise. Think nails on a chalk board as far as irritating factors go. The noise cuts right through and you would already know if the noise is present in yours or not. You may also not be sensitive to high frequencies.

My new Studio (Max) is loud. Both the fan at idle (1300rpm, not silent at all), and the whining. 220V in Belgium.

I can use Macs Fan Control to lower their speed, then the air noise becomes acceptable, but whines appear. I have to play with the fan speed to find "silent rpm values", and those change during the day. As soon as a whine appears, I change the speed a bit and it goes away.

So there is a solution, but I'm really disappointed as I was hoping a premium experience with this machine. I'll have to install it under my desk somehow, and crawl every morning to start it up.

I am not trying to minimize your fan noise, but why are you turning if off to begin with? In the System Prefs there is an Energy Saver to take care of all of that, without Shutting Down and powering off. It is harder on the computer to constantly power it up, than it is to keep it on. After a given amount of time the display turns off and you can have the the hard drive power down. And your Mac is still able to received mail and message and do software updates while in that state.

Sorry about your noise. I have absolutely none. Even if I consciously try, I cannot hear mine. It is possible a lot of that can be contributed to the status of my hearing.

Everyone goes on about the fan noise… it’s the whine, nothing to do with the fans in any way that is the main issues on many units. The metallic tinny high pitch whine really makes this machine worthy of being used as a shot put ball. If you have a Quiet unit, enjoy it… but many of us are raging at the money we spent to have something with such an annoying defect in it. I’m so glad but angry that I returned this crap back for a full refund… but what really is annoying is that Apple has not even had the decency to give details on what this issue is…

No company can afford to do what you describe, because it opens them to multiple lawsuits.

These lawsuits enrich lawyers without providing any relief from the noise, and is likely to drag on for years, at the end of which actual damaged users MAY get a few pennies for their trouble.

if you have a problem with YOUR unit that is hardware related, your evaluation at the Genius Bar at an Apple-owned store is FREE -- in warranty or out. If defective, that can be addressed. (Be sure to make an appointment, because they are always busy with the many different Apple products they support).

Perfect answer. No one that I know appreciates having to take anything they bought in for Warranty Service. But it can happen no matter what you buy. Whether you buy a Toyota Prius or a BMW, there is a chance you will have a problem. Apple is great with handling issues. As I understand it, not all Mac Studios have a noise problem. Maybe they all do, and there are others like me who just cannot hear it. If your Studio has a noise issue, the Genius Bar will more than likely arrange to exchange it. Give it a shot.

I agree. I now have had two MacStudio ultras returned. I adjusted fan speeds to 1100rpms and 1588rpms which are acceptable as this eliminated the high pitch squeal. The question is, should I have to do this to a 3k dollar computer? My 16 inch MacBook Pro M1 is Flawless!!!

I believe (theory) this is not a fan issue (harmonic) but a power supply issue. It has been noted on you tube, apple has at least two power suppliers and I'll bet we will find out that one has the issue. Maybe this is why only about 40% of the Mac Studios have the issue.

Yep, the whining sound doesn't seem like a fan issue to me either.

Its definitely a problem, it seems to be there even before the fans even kick in, from what I have read.

Also I have now read that people in USA and Europe have the problem, on different voltages, with the Mac Studio AND ULTRA, seems like there are less complaints about the ULTRA as less people have purchased it.

With these reports and reports of terrible Macbook Pro M1 Max performances, I really am still holding off buying a new computer! Fortunately, at the moment my system is running a flawlessly , Logic pro on Monterey 12.4 on a 2015 Macbook Pro 15" i7 2.8 with 16gb RAM.
