Changing a Desktop Shortcut Icon

Hello, I have been able to do this before, but no more it seems. After many attempts I have concluded that it is not feasible to use an icon with a .png extension. I have now tried a plethora of extensions but none are working. In 'get info' I've tried x 2 approaches, c & p the icon into the top left hand corner with the little box/logo highlighted, or, d & d the icon, hover over the box/logo and release when the '+' shows. Please could someone advise why this is not working thank you.

Always, easy, when, you know, how. Thanks very much. What I've realised is I was trying to copy the image from the shortcut to the image, rather from it being open. What I will say though is that this has worked previously as I've changed several before. Ok, thanks indeed.

Good computing Nomadibility—Sounds like you figure it out...
