AirPlay audio from iPad to iMac stops working

I have the same problem as mentioned at AirPlay from iPad to MacBook stops working - Apple Community

AirPlay music from iPad or iPhone to iMac works well initially, but if I stop it and come back later there's no sound. The timer on the music source is ticking over and if I change to another output, the iPad's own speakers or Bluetooth speaker for example, it works. But the Mac is mute. The only solution is to restart it.

Short pauses in playing music don't cause it, even if I send the Mac to sleep or Lock Screen briefly, but longer ones do.

As I only updated from Big Sur to Monterey to get this feature, I'm disappointed.

M1 iMac, MacOS 12.3, iOS 15.4 on iPad & iPhone

I phoned Apple Support but couldn't reproduce the fault during the call, so they couldn't help. I'll try them again next time it happens

Every other link between iOS and Mac works normally, such as Handoff, AirDrop, Sidecar, Universal Control etc. My setup is not at fault: my Wi-fi, Bluetooth, Apple ID, Sharing preferences and devices are all capable and configured correctly. So please don't tell me I need to check or change these, but any other advice is welcome.

I've found a temporary fix: stop the 'coreaudiod' process in Activity Monitor. After a brief pause for it to be automatically restarted, the sound from iPad to iMac is restored. This saves restarting the computer. It doesn't last long, though. As above, if it's not used for a couple of hours or more the problem recurs.

I was prompted to try this by this article: https://www.howtogeek.com/321905/what-is-coreaudiod-and-why-is-it-running-on-my-mac/

I'll now send a bug report to Apple using Feedback Assistant

An update on this: It has just happened again after about half an hour of playing music on a different device, without using the Mac for any other task (so other apps are not interfering with it). When I switch to the iMac, the timer ticks down, on the iPad and on the audio play drop down from the menu bar on the iMac, and the pause, play and skip controls work on both, but there's no sound. So the Mac is obviously receiving the signal from the iPad but not transmitting it to the speakers.
