installed big sur about 18 months ago, considerable slow down in starting mac mini (late2014) and in operation. About a month ago the audio left. Decided to upgrade to Monterey. Installed Monterey after several hours received popup stating upgrade and installation was complete. Restarted mini. Time to restart, including the 3-4 restarts that would happen after programs ceased to operate, until able to comfortably have programs function for about an hour. This has been the average start time since installing big sur. Has been as long as 3 hours after a power outage. When I check the preference overview it shows bi sur as the operating system not Monterey. The software update module regularly shuts off stating a disconnect happened. Just ran the software update module and it now states that there is an upgrade to Monterey available and asks to upgrade. Any suggestions on how to remedy these situations?

First go to upper left hand corner of screen and click on the Apple icon, "About This Mac." It will tell you the specs of your computer including the MacOS. Second, if you have not upgraded to at least an SSD, the HD will be too slow for Monterey. It would seem you have Monterey running or the System Preferences Software Update would not say Monterey update available. Current Monterey is Version 12.3 (21E230). If you have an SSD, then upgrade.

Not as slow as Monterey, it is a smaller MacOS so takes less time to boot. You would still have the lag in starting up Applications that you have now, that is from the HD, not the system. You could add a NVMe with little trouble, but, still it takes special tools and an adapter plus the cost of the NVMe. Look it up on YouTube with your Late 2014 model in mind to find instructions. If you did that, the boot time of Monterey is 20 seconds, compared to 1 minute 10 seconds. That is what I am getting on the same model.
