USB 2.0 device not working with USB 3.0 hub

Hi,

I am on a Macbook Pro 2020 Intel and Monterey.

I have a webcam that is USB 2.0. It does not work when I plug it into the USB 3.0 ports on my monitor or when I plug it into the USB 3.0 port on a USB-C hub connected directly to the laptop.

How can I get my webcam or any USB 2.0 device to work with the USB 3.0 ports?? It seems this has been a widespread issue but I could not find any solution.

The ultimate solution is to get a Monterey compatible hub. Unfortunately, as you have determined, not all hubs work with Monterey.

If your devices work attached directly to your MBP, then the hub is definitely suspect. Maybe operate them directly attached until you can get a Monterey compatible hub. A search may find that for you.

Apple sells a good USB-A to USB-C adapter for directly connecting USB devices to your Mac.

Thank you! I should be more specific… I actually do have a compatible hub, the Brydge Stone Pro docking station and the webcam does work there.

The problem is that the webcam cable is not long enough to reach the docking station when it’s sitting on top of the monitor. That’s why I wanted to be able to use the monitor’s USB ports. Plus, those are three unused ports I would like to plug other things into.

By the way, those ports don’t even work on an iPhone charging cable.

Also it seems this problem has been around since at least Catalina. I’m really surprised this is still an issue! It’s just USB 2 to 3, it’s lame that it’s a problem in the first place.
