You should check your keyboard language to make sure you’re typing in the right language. If not, change the language or ad a new one from Settings > General > Keyboards.

I do sometimes use a Spanish keyboard. When I went back to Pages to check out slothMan1’s solution, the app was working as it should and was also set to English. I tried to replicate the problem by selecting the Spanish keyboard but Pages continued to function normally. If the problem recurs, the first thing I will check will be the keyboard setting. So I am not entirely sure what happened but am glad the problem is gone. Thank you.
