Take this as an important lesson to start having frequent & regular backups of your computer and all external media (including the cloud) which includes important & unique data. Only the 2016 - 2017 MBPros have the "life boat" connector. None of the other USB-C Macs have any way of recovering data from their SSDs.

That is a proprietary Apple Service tool.

They would say it requires substantial expertise and could damage your computer or yourself.

If Apple had their way, you would have no way to get that tool at all.

FYI, that tool will not work with an M1 Mac so you will need an Intel Mac to be able to access the data on that 2016 - 2017 MBPro.

Since Apple includes Time Machine backup software for free with every macOS, Apple expects people to have their data backed up. Just be greatful there is even another potential option to access the data.

If the laptop powers on (does not need to boot, or have video on the screen), then you can try putting the laptop into Target Disk Mode to see if the SSD can be accessed from another Mac (Intel or M1).
