I’ve noticed after the last couple upgrades that when my iPhone 13 is unlocked the only text tone that will play is the default tone even though I have purchased tones for different people. The purchased tones only play when the phone is locked.

Another troubleshooting step you can try is toggling the text tone. To do this select a different text tone in Settings, restart your iPhone, then select your desired text tone.
If it continues, you may want to Contact Apple Support or use this Get Support link as all of your settings are correct.

Done and it still did it. The text tone plays just fine when phone is locked but not when it is unlocked. If you have Messenger open, then it plays the correct tone but if it’s unlocked on the Home Screen then it plays the default tone.
