Most efficient way to copy hard drive (just files, not programs or OS)

Every couple of years I transfer my data to a new drive and put the old one in storage. Just some added redundancy just in case.

I’ve always just did standard cut/paste, but it take a while. Any more efficient ways?

FWIW there are no programs or OS on this, just files. Also, the new drive is smaller than the one I’m copying from.

Why not create a TimeMachine backup or Carbon Copy Cloner standard backup? Neither copy your OS; they do copy apps but the space taken up is generally small compared to data. Both apps are well placed to be available in the future.

Copy and Paste may be slow, but to parse your data as you wish that may be the price.
