Monterey w/Apple silicone can't see my Garmin Nuvi 2597 as a USB drive, so can't update

Running MBP M1 14" w/Monterey. When plugging in Garmin Nuvi, MBP does not recognize the device. System report for USB port shows no devices connected. I am using the standard mini-USB-to-USB cable that worked with my previous MBP, but with the new M1 14", I added the Apple USB-to-USB-C adapter. Unfortunately, I don't have another cable to test with.

The Nuvi turns on when I plug it into the MBP as if it were in a car, not plugged into a Mac. So, it's getting power but not being recognized as a USB drive.

Wondering if the USB cables could be the problem? Just wondering if anyone else has seen this before I plunk down more money for a new cable.

Thx!

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)

I have the Garmin Nuvi 2597LMT and have used your setup with my Macs that only have USB-C connections, but they are Intel MacBook Pros, not an M1 computer. It sounds like your cable is not being recognized as a data cable.

If you have a powered hub, you might try that. Otherwise I think the next step is to try a different set of cables. I have several Garmin devices (several different Garmin Nuvi units, and a Garmin bicycle computer -- they all connect through the same type of cable).
