One app refuses to connect online! iLok License Manager refuses to connect online.

10 days ago, the application called iLok License Manager started saying "Online Access Unavailable" when I run the app. This app has worked fine for seven years but now I can't even login to use it at all. Unbelievably, iLok support says I am the only customer in their entire history to ever have this problem. I have gone into Firewall settings and entered the app and the iLok License Daemon for "approved" connections.

I don't have trouble shooting tools or knowledge to figure out why my computer is completely refusing to connect with their secure servers there at iLok, when I run the app iLok License Manager. What would you do next?

Using 2017 iMac with Catalina, and Ethernet.

Not having ANY kind of system wide connectivity issues at all. Only iLok License Manager has trouble.

I also have a 2009 MacBook Pro, I could MAYBE try to run the iLok License Manager app on it, maybe. I wish I had XRAY VISION to see behind my computer's attempt to connect inside that app. Why is it failing?

I've tried turning Firewall off, I've tried connecting thru Wifi instead of Ethernet, I've tried connect using a mobile phone hotspot instead of Ethernet, I've tried an earlier version of the app. Still it always says "Online Access Unavailable". And when you look at their server status report it always says their servers are fully operational.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

A -

1 - Suggest restarting in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

3 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

4 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

5 - Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The first thing - open iLok License Manager after restarting in Safe Mode gets an error message that a component is missing. This makes sense if non-Apple components are not loaded.

The 2nd thing - EtreCheck, I can do. I run that every so often. The 3rd thing - disable CleanMyMac, I could do, but I do have all of the features turned OFF that have to do with monitoring connections, I only use it for Cleaning.

If I could ask it in a different way, iLok support sent me this, which I don't 100% understand:

================= quote =====================

Can you enter the following URLs/links into your web browser and try going to these two locations?

    https://activation.paceap.com/Activation/

    https://activation.ilokcloud.com

Please provide us with a screenshots of what each displays.

The following information has been provided to users and their network administrators to help with the opening of connections to our online services through firewalls and various networking implementations:

Domain - activation.paceap.com / IP - 74.201.85.160

Domain - activation.ilokcloud.com / IP - 35.190.50.132

Standard web ports (i.e. 80 and 443)

=============== end quote =============

I notice when I ping 74.201.85.160, I get no response or time out.

But when I ping 35.190.50.132, there is a response.

Could that in itself be the problem?

And I notice in Console Logs that the iLok log reported this just now when I ran iLok License Manager:

"Error Code: ServerConnectionError"

"Error message: Could not connect to the activation server".

Does all this mean for sure that the problem is on iLok's end?

Or does it not mean that at all, and the problem could easily be on my end?

Thank you!

Wade C

<> CleanMyMac has been uninstalled, removed, and trashed, including all its components.

<> iLok LicensesManager still says "Online Access Unavailable"

<> created a new test user account on my Mac, ran iLok License Manager signed on as the new test user, the app still won't connect.

<> EtreCheck report attached

<> grateful for any help on this issue of why ONE APP on my computer (iLok License Manager) stopped working (can't connect to iLok servers).

<> iLok support has not helped too much so far, but they did provide IP addresses (posted above) which I guess represent the locations that iLok License Manager tries to connect to, and one of those IP addresses is unresponsive to pings so I am wondering if this means THEY have a connectivity issue, or I still have the connectivity issue.

Thank you,

Wade C.

Thank you, I will go through your comments on the EtreCheck report and report back. I especially appreciate the places you mentioned "the original issue". Many thanks. Might take me a day or two.

I've read the guideline which says "Never reveal any personal information" and the only edit I see is that the moderator abbreviated my name where I typed my whole name, so - confirming and asking: the best practice here is: go by a pseudonym or abbreviate your first OR last name, or just don't type your name at all?

Welcome and take the time you require to digest all from the report. We are basically always here except during Family time and Espresso breaks.

Things of the Personal Nature including real names that would identify you are not suggested as has been already experienced.

As for fake names - that too is not really needed.

As long as we are replying to the Technical Questions and Technical Responses - the remainder is not really needed.

Yes, it may appear impersonal - but we know to whom we are addressing .
