OK, I just dragged the Desktop folder icon into favourites in the sidebar and it appeared. Hopefully it will stay! Thanks for this idea. I had earlier tried dragging it into Locations, but it failed. Interesting.

Thank you. So strange, I have ticked it in that place, but it still does not show up on the sidebar. I wonder if this means Monterey is not truly compatible with my older Mac. It disappeared after I upgraded from my previous system.
Just to be sure have you put your cursor over the drop down arrow
Have you tried dragging the desktop folder into the Sidebar? Do a search in finder for desktop and drag.
In Finder Preferences > Sidebar > Desktop.
I found it in the Go pull down menu!
But is it showing in the Sidebar?
Unfortunately, even if I try a few times to select it in Preferences, it refuses to show up in the sidebar. In fact I noticed a few other items I selected failed to show up as well.
Yes I have done that several times just to check. It is definitely some sort of Monterey upgrade problem on my 2017 Mac desktop computer, but I really appreciate your replies and help.
