Safari jumps to the top of the previous page

I have seen a couple of other discussions on here about this, but nothing seems to fix it.

When I am using Safari (iPhone iOS 15.4) any time I hit the back button, it brings me to the top of the previous page instead of where I left off. This is particularly annoying when using google search. I don’t remember this always being the case, and I feel that this is only been recent (within the last few months).

I have tried the private/non private tabs, deleting Safari data/history, force closing Safari, and nothing.

Is there a setting I am missing?

Didn’t work for me.

What is working for now is changing default search engine to something I don’t use and continuing to use google. If I set to any of the other default search engines and use the one selected the problem persists with all web pages originating from a click in that search engine. Interestingly if you swipe part way back you can see the last page, but if you go all the way back to the last page it refreshes no matter what.

Presently set to duck duck go and using google seems to work without the browser scrolling all the way to the top when hitting back button.

This has been an issue for me going on 3 years and has driven me nuts! One would think that @apple would address this issue either by documenting the correct settings to stop this abhorrent behavior or correct the issue in software updates. There should be no reason that safari can’t cache the last page position when browsing. Opening on additional tabs is cumbersome and utilizes more resources if you you have more tabs open or you click though multiple links and it does not close automatically.

Get it together Apple! This has been going on long enough!

This has been bugging me for years. It’s not new to 15.4 in any way.

This is absolutely true. Safari started with this weird behavior many years ago. It is the only browser I am aware of that comes with this annoying issue. And yes, I am seeing this issue regularly on ALL Apple platforms.

It seems the problem only occurs when the content on the previous page (the page you’re going back to) has slightly changed. For many news pages this is very common since they shuffle the content every time you load them.

A page where it occurs pretty much alway is the most popular German news site www.spiegel.de. Just try it and you will see that going back will always (let’s say in 3-4 of 5 tries–stay a few seconds before you go back) cause Safari to jump to the top of the page. It works in all other browsers though.

I am experiencing this and have reported it. It’s very very annoying. I called Apple yesterday, sent a screen recording etc. I will chase for a fix often as it’s been an issue for ages and ages.

Even the tech support person said he has the same issue on his iPhone.

it’s true opening a new tab from a link is a work around but much slower. Google chrome doesn’t ever behave like this but it’s not as good a browser as safari on iOS.

It would help if others also called Apple and reported this bug so we can get a fix asap.

I too have the same problem. The back button would take me to the TOP of the previous page, instead of where I left off on the previous page. The reason is because in safari settings I changed the default “tabs bar” to “single tab.” Changing the setting back to “tabs bar” fixed the problem.

I can’t remember when the new “feature” tabs bar was implemented, but it is now the default for Safari. “Tabs bar” puts the address field and back/forward buttons on the bottom of the screen. “Single tab” puts the address field and back/forward buttons at the top of the screen like they used to be.

I have this problem too! It corrected when I installed IOS16 but within a few hours the issue returned. LONG talk today with Apple Care. I’m told a factory reset will correct everything. Waiting for the proper cable to arrive. I’m using the iPhone 13pro max. I cannot believe how many are having this issue with no word from Apple. I’m promised a factory reset will solve this, we’ll see 🙁 if do not have this issue on my MacBook Air.

GIRL!!!!! You win the prize THIS IS THE FIX. Followed your instruction and it worked here too. I suspect it was turning off “Preload Top Hit” that proves the fix but I’ll look at that later.

at the suggestion of Apple Care I was going to factory reset my phone because they exhausted every troubleshooting trick they had for this one. Thanks to you I don’t have to. Thank you so very much!!

someone alert Apple Care and suggest they hire Ashley 🙂

Yeah, that worked for a minute. What also worked for a minute was the IOS 16 update, and after that the 16.0.3 update. All these fixes have worked temporarily only. No issues on the macBookAir, just my phone (13pm). Apple Care (once you can get them to admit this is a known issue), recommends a factory reset. I’m reluctant to do that. Has anyone permanently researched over this issue with a factory reset?

I have the same problem but I have come up with a solution that works for me.

I spent an hour doing a chat with apple support. They did not come up with a solution and are kicking me up to a phone chat tomorrow.

Someone mentioned that Safari uses Google for searching. I went to Settings>Safari>Browser and you can change the browser that safari uses. Mine was set to Google. I tried a different browser for Safari and still had the same problem.

Now I also have the Google app on my phone. When I use it I don't have this problem. So I removed Safari from the bottom bar on the phone (Didn't get rid of it, just slid it up onto the page until I've spoken with tech support) and replaced it with the Google app. Using the app the searches seem exactly the same as they did thru Safari (as far as I can tell) but are working fine and not jumping to the very beginning of the search page any more when I hit the back arrow. I hope this might work for you.

Yay :)
