Safari jumps to the top of the previous page

I have seen a couple of other discussions on here about this, but nothing seems to fix it.

When I am using Safari (iPhone iOS 15.4) any time I hit the back button, it brings me to the top of the previous page instead of where I left off. This is particularly annoying when using google search. I don’t remember this always being the case, and I feel that this is only been recent (within the last few months).

I have tried the private/non private tabs, deleting Safari data/history, force closing Safari, and nothing.

Is there a setting I am missing?

I had the same problem was driving me crazy.

I manage to fix it when I moved the search/address bar to the bottom of the screen.

I found if the address bar was at the top it would alway scroll to the top when I went back a page. But when the address was at the bottom when I go back a page it would stay in the same place I was last at.

In the address bar you just need to tap on the aA to adjust

I too have the same problem. The back button would take me to the TOP of the previous page, instead of where I left off on the previous page. The reason is because in safari settings I changed the default “tabs bar” to “single tab.” Changing the setting back to “tabs bar” fixed the problem.

I can’t remember when the new “feature” tabs bar was implemented, but it is now the default for Safari. “Tabs bar” puts the address field and back/forward buttons on the bottom of the screen. “Single tab” puts the address field and back/forward buttons at the top of the screen like they used to be.

Sometime in iOS 15.x Apple introduced the “Tab Bar” setting. I had my Safari setting at “Single Tab” and I had the problem where the back button would send me to the top of the previous page. In Settings-Safari, once I changed to “Tab Bar,” the back button worked as expected, I would return to where I left off on the previous page. Among other things, the “Tab Bar “ setting moves the address bar to the bottom of the screen, which took some getting used to. But it works.

The solution has already been posted in this discussion but I’m going to clarify what to do.

Apple Introduced a new design feature called “Tab Bar” which allows multiple tabs to be scrolled in both directions placed at the bottom of the screen.

Many people including myself do not like this new design and switched it off. Enabled the “Single Tab” to have it back at the top of the screen where it belongs.

Then these issues with the going back to the last page started. And never stopped.

Switching back to enabling the “Tab Bar” at the bottom in settings fixed the back button scroll issue. The scroll issue is much worse and extremely annoying, so I guess we have to use this new tabs bar.

I hope Apple addresses this in iOS16 or another Update for 15. Just give us our beloved single tab bar back at the top of the screen without braking the safari experience completely.

I have the same problem but I have come up with a solution that works for me.

I spent an hour doing a chat with apple support. They did not come up with a solution and are kicking me up to a phone chat tomorrow.

Someone mentioned that Safari uses Google for searching. I went to Settings>Safari>Browser and you can change the browser that safari uses. Mine was set to Google. I tried a different browser for Safari and still had the same problem.

Now I also have the Google app on my phone. When I use it I don't have this problem. So I removed Safari from the bottom bar on the phone (Didn't get rid of it, just slid it up onto the page until I've spoken with tech support) and replaced it with the Google app. Using the app the searches seem exactly the same as they did thru Safari (as far as I can tell) but are working fine and not jumping to the very beginning of the search page any more when I hit the back arrow. I hope this might work for you.

Yay :)

FIX FOUND

using iPhone 13ProMax (16.1.2) Safari

open a search and chose a listing. When ready to return to the search page, swipe right (very slowly) till you see the search page, continue slow right swipe till the original page is presented at the place you left off. Important: slow as a slug swipe right and the phone screen must be absolutely clean. If the screen is dirty or the swipe is fast it won’t work. You’re welcome

SOLVED — sort of.

I noticed the issue with Safari returning to the top of the search results when using the back arrow after one of the updates in the fall of 2022.

Don’t use the back arrow at the bottom of the page to return to the previous page. Just swipe from left to right. It will take you back to the same position on the previous page.

I also noticed the cursor wasn’t behaving the same way. When you try to insert or change something in the middle of the search bar, it was a huge struggle to get it to the spot you wanted.

I have to zoom in on the page and then put my finger on it and move the screen from side to side to read the sentences because it’s too small for me. When I would get my finger too close to the edge and try to move the screen over it would change the page.

I found that it was the sliding cursor. You tap and hold the space bar. The letters will disappear. Then you just slide your finger around which controls where the cursor is and just drop it where you want it

I am experiencing this and have reported it. It’s very very annoying. I called Apple yesterday, sent a screen recording etc. I will chase for a fix often as it’s been an issue for ages and ages.

Even the tech support person said he has the same issue on his iPhone.

it’s true opening a new tab from a link is a work around but much slower. Google chrome doesn’t ever behave like this but it’s not as good a browser as safari on iOS.

It would help if others also called Apple and reported this bug so we can get a fix asap.

This is a ridiculous claim. I use a content blocker so I don't even see that many ads.

Which — by the way — is not causing the scroll to top bug. When I disable all content blockers, clear cookies and website data, it still happens. It happens in other browsers too, like FireFox. This is clearly a WebKit problem.

I spoke to Dutch and English Apple Support Technicians on the phone. They acknowledge that this is a bug and they told me that Apple is investigating as to why this is happening. Maybe this will get fixed in upcoming iOS 16.4 release as they are implementing changes to WebKit.

I'm astounded by why it takes them so *&^%$#$%^& long though. I hardly shop or read news anymore on iOS because this is such a **** bug.
