Universal Control with macbook (lid closed) External monitors and iPad

I have a macbook pro (running OS 12.3) connected to two external monitors. I am unable to use Universal control with my ipad (running ios 15.4) when my macbook lid is closed and I am using just the two external monitors. Is there a way to use universal control with an ipad and macbook when the lid is closed?

It may be worth reviewing the related Apple Support article:

Universal Control: Use a single keyboard and mouse between Mac and iPad

... and double-checking your settings on both your MacBook and iPad.

Especially that you're logged into both systems with the same Apple iCloud ID with 2-factor authentication, and that both systems are running *both* Bluetooth and WiFi ... and of course, that neither is sleeping as you try using Universal Control!-)

If Universal Control still doesn't work for you, make sure that you're not using a Managed Apple ID, not sharing the iPad's cellular connection, nor that your Mac isn't sharing its internet connection. Also, if you're using Firewall on your Mac, make sure that "Allow external connections" is set, at least for "Universal Control.app" and "rapportd" .

I have a MacBook Pro (13”, 2018, running MacOS 12.3) connected to two external monitors. I am able to use Universal Control with my iPad (7th gen, running iOs 15.4) whether or not the MacBook lid is closed.

Here is what my setup looks like in Preferences -> Displays (with the MacBook lid closed; otherwise the MacBook’s own screen would show up underneath the large, blue monitor):

Dunno why Universal Control would work for me, but not you, in what would seem like a very similar setup.
