For the past 2 days I have been unable to download documents from email due to "not enough space on the disk". However, I have checked my hard drive and it looks like there is plenty of space. Suggestions?

Is user profile true and accurate iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.4 ?
Has the user Emptied the Trash recently ?
The current version of Big Sur is version 11.6.5
The disk, as you say, appears to have plenty of space. Do you have attributes for the target object? Is it’s metadata corrupt? Are you sure that the source site is OK?
otherwise, open disk utilities and run a check on your disk, and see what it reports.
