Document storage not adding up

When I look at the "Storage" info on my computer, it says that roughly 80GB are being taken up by "Documents".

When I look through the "File browser" in the "Manage Storage" section, the totals only add up to around 15GB. Any ideas on where the additional 65GB could be coming from?

Hi ckardatzke,

Welcome to the Apple Community

Any ideas on where the additional 65GB could be coming from?

Wondering if you have documents in the Trash influencing the different totals.

Also formatting etc. associated with documents may be added to one total and not the other.

Seems the most accurate estimate of storage is always the "bar" with different colours for different categories:

accessed via Apple menu  > About This Mac > Storage

Eg: See used and available storage space on your Mac – Apple Support

says: "Re: Documents:

Contains files in your home folder that aren’t included in other categories, such as Pages documents and PDFs. It also includes videos and photos that are not managed by your photo library:

(for example, an image that a friend shares with you using AirDrop)."

You're welcome, ckardatzke.

Thank you for your reply and added info.

Re: I wish there was a way to see what comprised that 80GB estimate.

See Apple menu  > About This Mac > Storage > Manage > Click on Documents (in the left sidebar)

You should see a breakdown of "Documents" with a top menu. Clicking "Large Files" (if needed) should give you info.

(Eg: I see I have mp4 music videos that I have imported without using the music app listed there.)
