Time Capsule and MacBook Pro

i think my questions are easy. A little history first followed by 3 questions.

i Have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, 8gb Ram 1tb storage, original drive was HDD, I had only 1 User / Admin named (bikeman five) 6 years later in 2018 my 2012 MBPro HDD drive died. Apple Genius Bar put in a 1tb SATA drive with new Administrator / User Named (Roscoe). I came home, logged into (Roscoe) & restored my 2012 MBPro with a Backup from my 2 tb Time Capsule 5th generation SATA drive, that i purchased on 8/2016. When done I went to log in & there was 2 users, both Administrators, my original user (bikeman five) & the a new user (Roscoe). I only logged into (Roscoe) the new user, a 2nd time, none of my stuff was there. I switched users logged into my old user / Admin (bikeman five) & all my stuff was there. My 2012 MBPro ran great & still does to this day, Im using it now.

When Big Sur Came out it's only available for 2013 MBPro & newer. However I am still getting Catalina Security Updates & App Updates, my 2012 MBPro is running great. I use Microsoft Office 2019 95% of the time. 3 weeks ago I went into (Numbers) it would not open. A banner came up saying it will only open with Big Sur OS or Monterey OS, I need to update my OS to either of those 2. I cant go further than Catalina on my mid 2012 MBPro. I then I tried other apps 1/2 my apps would not work with Catalina OS. I decided it was time for something new, 3 weeks ago I purchased a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max 32 gb Ram & 2 tb of storage at $3899.00. I get my new 2021 MBPro on 4/29/2022. In preparation I decided I was going to remove all the junk from my 2012 MBPro that i did not use or want on my new MBPro. Such as MS Office 2010 & 2016 a bunch of apps I installed & never I deleted all that junk I didnt want including (Roscoe) the Admin / User that I never logged into except twice my first day with the new hard drive . All the crap i removed nothing form the library was 42 gb of crap. Now my 2012 MBPro (bikeman five) will not back up to the Time Capsule it won't go past "preparing". I found that i out because I entered Time Machine to retrieve 1 very old email i wanted to keep. When I entered Time Machine it opened as it always did. When I tried to pick a previous Backup, it shows all of them available, my oldest Backup 3/23/2018 & my newest Backup 3/29/2022 11pm and everything in between those dates. I thought it was all backed up under my original user (bikeman five) as i never went into user acct (Roscoe) except 2 times that first day.

In Time Machine It will not let me select anything i see nor can i scroll from 3/29/2022 to 3/3/2018. It does show 5 attempts that it tried backing up today i can scroll over them, i can put my pointer over them, they expand like as i move the pointer over them, i can see all 5 times & they are all blank white sheets and i can not select them when i hover over & they expand. I can see all the old back ups i just cant get past my last Backup which is blank. Its obvious this is due to deleting the Admin/ user (Roscoe) that Genius bar set up.).

My 2012 MBPro has every on it that i want to keep since the day i bought it in 2012. It currently has 540gb on the drive with 460gb available. I always needed a spare 2nd Backup. Incase my original, Time Capsule, fails, gets damaged or stolen.

Questions:

1) My Plan is to buy another bigger Time Capsule and Backup this 2012 MBPro onto the new Time Capsule. When that is successfully Backed up, I will load that onto my new 2021 MBPro. Make sure both pros are all good. The 2021 will then be identical duplicate to the 2012 except it will be Monterey OS. Which is always the way I wanted my MBPro just 1 user/ Admin. That Leaves me with both MBPros backed up on a new Time Capsule. I will then factory reset my old time Time Capsule and back that up from the new Time Capsule. This leaves me with 4 identical Back ups. I will take my new time capsule to work so they are in different locations. Then which ever MBPro i have at either place will always Backup. That leaves me with 2 Back ups at 2 locations, that are both synced to my MBPro's

Does this sound like the best way to resolve my issue?

2) Do SATA drives last Longer than HDD drive? I believe SATA drive is Digital no moving parts, if so what is average life span?

3) My old time capsule oldest Backup is 3/3/2018, Lets say I didnt delete (Roscoe) from my 2012 MBPro. Everything was still running normal here. When i got my new 2021 MBPro M1 Max on 4/29/22 and Migrated my back up to the new 2021 MBPro, would my new MBPro be identical to my 2012 and have all my photos and documents all the way back to 2012 or would only go back to 3/3/2018?

Sorry for the long history i did not expect it to be so long of an explanation.

thanks in advance.

thanks,

bikeman 5

MacOS is inherently a Multi-User system, and deciding to create just one account does not change that. Each and every User account has a unique Home folder. Migration often creates another Account.

You are welcome to delete that User and that Home folder PROVIDED you have another Admin user available. Usually, you need to be using your "other" Admin User to get access to delete an Account.

If you migrated another account over, it will NOT, by default, merge the files into at the logged-in user account.

You may have spent time migrating, then deleted the newly-migrated account (and the newly-migrated files).

There is a big difference between:

• using a Time Machine backup as a source for Migration Assistant and

• Restoring flies from an old backup.

Time machine backs up the MacOS Volumes on your COMPUTER. All of them, for multiple users. and it maintains the permissions on files for each user.

Migration assistant will be happy to restore all or selected accounts for whatever Users you choose, and maintain file permission for each user.

If a new User was created on a repaired machine or a different machine later, its Account may NOT have the same internal user number, and may not be NOT the same user -- even if the account-name and password are identical.

Your situation is really complicated. ¿can you restate EXACTLY what you are trying to accomplish?

Time machine backs up entire Computers. Inside a backup for a Computer, there may be multiple Users.

Migration Assistant is ready, willing, and able to Restore data from an old computer to a new computer, and can use the old computer or its backups as the source for that data.

What you are now describing is very ordinary. Use this article as a guide:

Thank You for responding, I am not having trouble with any of my devices, MacBooks and 2 Time Capsules are working as they should with no issues. I will repost a more simplified and direct question. It was late i was up hours trying to resolve and research my issue. i will be more direct in what i am asking. Again thanks for your reply.

I know what you are saying, i am the only user on my MBPros.

I set up new MBPro as normal 1 user /admin only, it is only after you do a restore from a backup from Time Capsule that i end up with the second user/admin, the original that i set up new MBPro with and a 2nd user/admin that gets migrated over from the backup when migrating the older device to the new device. I have my new device user/admin and the user/admin from your old device.

Maybe you can answer this. I am quite familiar with the 10 second process you are explaining.

When i remover a user/ admin it gives me 3 options. 1) Save the home folder in disk image ( the disk will be saved in the deleted users file. 2) Dont change the home folder (the home folder remains the same). 3) Delete the home folder

What i did was option 3), remove and do not save. I am sure that is my mistake.

Questions:

1) What i do not know, is which is best to use, option 1 or 2?

2) Nor do i know what the best option 1 or 2?

3) I also do not know the result of each, Is option 1 & 2 the same the exact thing other than placement in a different folder?

4) what is exactly is option 1 do what does option 2 do and why?

Thank you,

bikeman5

i had a new SATA drive put in by apple genius bar, they set up the new user/ admin for me, to make sure the new drive worked, then sent me home to migrated Backup from my 5Th Gen Time Capsule Back Up which was my original with the old HDD drive. The Migration went fine. When I logged in i had both Users. Booting up was slower with 2 users vs before the new old drive. I noticed since i deleted the second user/ admin Booting up was faster like before when i had only 1 user.

I wanted to delete the User to have less clutter and i dont need or use the 2nd user, my MBPro seems faster at start up with only 1 user vs 2 or 3 users

I do not need them to merge, i just wanted to delete the user/admin used to set up the MBPro without losing access to the time capsule.

When i deleted the User/ Admin i used option (3) remove and do not save), doing this i lost access to my Time Capsule Backups and i cant back up and more to that time capsule anymore, it does not recognize my MBPro or Original Admin doesn't have the permission that the set up admin did.

I think when deleting the set up Admin, you cant use Option 3 (remove and dont save). This will make you lose access to Time capsule Backups.

you have to use Option 1 (Save the home folder in disk image the disk will be saved in the deleted users file.) or option 2 (Dont change the home folder, the home folder remains the same). i dont know if 1 or 2 is better or if either of those will make me lose access to my time capsule as option 3 did?

I never used the account that i deleted. It was set up by apple. So they could test the new drive they installed.

all my backups were through my my user/ admin i kept. I never back up that other user/ admin.

I lost access on my 2012 MBPro on 3/29/22

are you saying a brand new 2021 macbook pro can not migrate from that time capsule from 3/28/22 or before?

im thinking it would be no different than if i still had access with the other user account.

the time capsule would see the new mac the same way.

in 2018 when my HDD drive died and a new SATA drive was installed it did not have access to my old user/admin. It migrated every thing over from the, i just migrated the backup i choose. the user/ admin unknown user came over with the backup i choose.

it would be pretty much an identical scenero, the 2021 MBPro would be the aka new SATA drive IN 2019

Yeah I’m thinking I know this I know time machine is totally different in time capsule time capsules with backs it up and that’s what stores it on a drive the time machine is just something that you can access that as in snapshots at all different times so it’s not like restore in a hard drive you just go in there and you can grab one little piece of something? Thank you again

Sorry for the delay I had something that came up that I had to take care of yesterday but I really appreciate your help and this should be much clear.

I’m gonna start right from the beginning instead of presenting scenarios to see if i can solve my issue this will be easier and less complicated to understand.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that backs up to a 5th gen 2tb Time Capsule since 2016.

my MBPro HDD drive died, in 2018 a new SATA 1TB drive was installed in the 2012 MBPro. I did a complete restore from the Time Capsule onto the 2012 MBPro which is still backing up to the Time Capsule until 7 days ago. After that SATA drive install and restore i ended with 2 Admin/ users. My original and the one from apple setting up for testing the new Drive.

Weeks ago I bought a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max. Apple said the best easiest way is just do a restore from my Time Capsule to the 2022 M1 max. “That was the original plan” it’s still the plan.

I have 12 years of stuff on my 2012 MBPro w/680 GB‘s on the 1TB SATA drive. I dumped off 40 GB‘s of crap documents that I didn’t need. The 2012 is at 640 GB‘s which was still backing up to the Time Capsule. All is still good. No issues.

Then I decided I really didn’t want the two Admin/Users on my new MacBook 2021.

I thougt after the migration to the M1 Max I was going to end up with a third Admin/ User.

I was asking around in some Apple Forums. Could i and how to get rid of one of the Admin/ users.

I was told i could delete either Admin as long as they were both Administrators. Even in apple communities i was told the same thing, after the fact, i responded back that is not accurate as i just found out.

On 3/28/22 i deleted the Admin from 2018 that was not my original from 2012.

I then realized that my 2012 stopped & could not backup to the Time Capsule. Nor could i access anything in Time Machine. When i go to system preferences to Time Capsule i can see my oldest Backup 3/3/2018 and my last 3/28/22. In Time Machine i can see them all, i just cant access them, im sure this is because of deleting 1 of my 2 Administrators.

I went into safe mode did first aid on data and the drive. Both were successful with no errors found. 1st aid took 7 min on data less than 2 minutes on the hard-drive.

That is everything the whole situation i face.

I have done nothing with the M1 Max and wont until i am sure the best way, i do not want lose anything.

Now the questions.

I believe when i migrate the Time Capsule to the 2021 MBPro M1 Max i will be asked which (back up & date) to use, is this correct??

If yes i would choose 1 or 2 days before the admin was deleted. That would get me back to 3/27/22 with no issues, like i never had any issues, is this correct??

I talked to apple salesman that sold me M1 Max, he said i am correct. I can choose any date and that migration should load back fine and id have the 2 administrators. Is the salesman correct?

Apr 3, 2022 9:59 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

i have not had a chance to read your link yet and certainly will, my conclusion is, my new 2021 MBPro will be just fine and if i restore my data back to 3/27/22 before any user got deleted, it will be just normal again. now it has been 4 years since i did a full restore.

A) will i have the option pick the day i want to restore back to?

one other simple question, i cant currently back up to that time capsule since 3/28/22. im not gonna have time to set up my new make for a week or 2 i have many projects going on outside the pc world.

what is the best way to store and or transfer this 3 weeks of data that isn't backed up.

B) should i airdrop all document and forward all email to myself after the new mac is set up????

that seems easy and quick

not mentioned i have 2 brand new in the box never opened 5th gen 2TB Time Capsules for when my old Time Capsule is tired or old which is now its been running for 6 years now with out being turned of other than power outage.

i dont think i should backup this 2012 MBPro to them as it has an admin problem.

1) my plan is restore my backup of choice to the new 2021 MBPro.

2) if that is a success then i will start fresh and start using a new Time Capsule.

i dont do cloud and i really need a 2nd back up in case of fire or theft.

3) i was going to put the second new Time Capsule at a different location and Back up to that monthly. then shut it down because i dont need a router or wifi station just storage for extra protection, i was going shut it down after each monthly back up on having on when i back up, to extend the life by a lot.

4) i would then erase the my current time capsule and have it totally rebuilt with new drive and fan and anything else it needs or should have, test it of course then box it and put it on the shelf for 5 years down the road when my other is 5 or 6 years old.

C) is this a good plan???

again thanks a bunch, these will be my last questions here. looking forward to your response. to the 3 questions above.
