As a newbie I have found it confusing that it seems many members in the Community seem to talk about subscriptions for AppleTV. Are they confusing the AppleTV app with the Apple TV+ channel found on the Apple TV app. ?

Apple TV is the device, and two models are currently available for purchase: the Apple TV 4K (Second generation, 2021) and the Apple TV HD (2015). Using the device you can view Apple's programs on the subscription service and additionally rent or buy content provided by other channels.
Apple TV app is the software found on Apple hardware (iOS devices and Macs), and the app can be installed on other streaming devices and smart TVs. Using the app you can watch the content on Apple's streaming service, Apple TV+.

I think you may have misunderstood.
I am aware of and agree with all you have said.
My question is why do some Community members refer to AppleTV subscriptions when there's no such thing. Shouldn't they be referring to AppleTV + subscriptions?

Thanks for making your question clear.
The answer is probably yes, to be precise and accurate, but there is only one video subscription service offered by Apple so there isn't a lot of room for ambiguity.

Once again I agree. That's why I found it confusing that many members referred to AppleTV subscriptions not AppleTV + subscriptions.
The issue first arose for me when I spoke to Apple support in Singapore and Australia about an inability to rent movies on the Apple TV app through Google TV, after having no problems for 12 months and they both referred to AppleTV app, not AppleTV +, subscriptions. I found this confusing at the time and have subsequently found them after research to be both incorrect, ( the Apple TV app no longer rents movies on Google TV. Nothing to do with an " AppleTV app subscription. "
Subsequently it seems to me there is much confusion about AppleTV app and AppleTV+ on many levels.

members are just users, tons of people here talk about iWatch and iTv, trying to correct mislabeling is likely not going to provide any real result.
