How can I use migration assistant to transfer files from a backup on an external hard drive? I didn't use Time Machine to back up, but rather Acronis true image for Western Digital. The backups are TBX files and they aren't recognized. When I plugged the HD into the Mac, it started a Time Machine backup. Migration assistant doesn't recognize the drive.

FWIW I just updated my 2013 Mac to Monterrey using OpenCore Legacy Patcher and erased the Mac in the process so it's like a new Mac.

Also, you NEED to erase your Mac and reinstall macOS Catalina! You should not ever "hack" your Mac to run a newer version of macOS. It will only lead to major security issues, performance issues, and lots of stability issues.

Then create a Time Machine backup and migrate, very simple to do and your problem is solved. Please refer to the guide in Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. You can also use a Bootable clone backup, you will need either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner (both their free trial versions) to backup and migrate from.
