HDR videos on Instagram

while scrolling through Instagram, I saw a video being displayed in its HDR format (the ones that we can see in our gallery with the brightness boost). Is it now possible to upload videos in HDR format to Instagram? (I am assuming yes because I already have seen some HDR videos on Instagram). If so, how do I upload HDR content on Instagram? Because when I tried to upload mine, it converts it into the usual mp4 format (I have high quality uploads turned on in my data settings). Is there a special setting I need to activate or a special app I need to use?

I feel you and I thought the same that this is only available to select people until today. I tried all sorts of different formats but nothings helped. It’s actually all simple. Just record in HDR but only in HD 60fps. Apparently IG doesn’t support 4k and is not capable of processing 4K format. Upload it directly to reels or video posts. It will appear in HDR briefly and then might disappear but will appear back in about 30 mins since it takes IG longer to process HDR.

I’ve noticed this on my feed, too. What we’re experiencing is likely part of an A/B test that Instagram is tinkering with.

Any proper tech platform routinely does these tests for new and/or experimental features before either scaling them up if successful, or learning it doesn’t work if they fail. They’ll analyze user engagement, bandwidth/data concerns, and other metrics they can quantify and take their next steps.

Adding support for HDR video is expected for Instagram, so certainly it will roll out worldwide soon. This test likely won’t measure a “should we/shouldn’t we” questions, but more so “how, where, when” questions.

Separately, it will be interesting to see if they begin branding content as HDR, with graphics, hashtags, or something. As of now, the video just lives in the feed without any special indication.
