Apple Watch stolen

My wife and I believe her watch was stolen. The location on the find my is the same apartment building but a different apartment. Will her locking it “marked as lost” prevent someone from resetting it and making it their own?

This explains in detail. The Apple Watch’s passcode is required to turn off Lost Mode.
