I recently upgraded to 24" Mac from old Catalina os. I used migration assistant to transfer my data using TM backups. The old backups were on hfs format. I now want to convert TM backups to apfs keeping all the backups. I was using 2 backup drives that alternate between backups. This make any since?

You cannot convert. Just keep the old TM drive in case you need and start a fresh drive dedicated to TM backups which will require APFS format.j
