Keynote audio not working

I am recording audio for a keynote presentation. On slide 15 of 28 and, while by all indications it is recording, when I stop and go to play it back, nothing is there. I've checked mic levels, connections etc. Everything I can think of. I don't get it. Can anyone help?

The only way to test a Recorded Slideshow is to go to Play > Play Recorded Slideshow

The recorded sound file is not visible in Keynote

Go to System Preferences > Sound and confirm the microphone to be used is selected and the sound level is correct.

Are you following this procedure:

In Keynote, select the first slide then go to: Play > Record Slideshow

click the red button at bottom left

after the count down, start the voice over, press the spacebar to advance through the slides

to stop recording, press the record button
