FCP 10.5.6 on an iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) running macOS Catalina 10.15.7. Just a few hours ago, smooth running, but now I cannot zoom in or out of the timeline. Work has come to a stop! How do I fix this?

I am not sure exactly what you mean by "guide the system". Since technically the Music library is "in the same place as before", I am sure that everything that you put in your Music will be on the external drive.
Other things will be wherever you put them.
I'm not a very technical, "under the hood" person, and I don't know how to speak the proper computer nomenclature. But to my mind, "guide the system" is very similar to "automagically." So tomorrow is my big day to take the plunge into nuts and bolts. That sounds pretty painful! Hopefully though, your clear instructions will lead to success.

My iMac reports that FCP doesn't run in the Safe Mode.

The App Store will give the last available version for your OS, which I think is 10.5.4. Of you want 10.5 specifically you’ll need to have a copy saved somewhere, maybe in Time Machine.
Are you clicking at the bottom left of the window, on the name of your account?
Are you seeing FCP amongst your purchases, and clickig the download icon next to it?
