Studio Display Will Not Wake From Sleep

Love the Studio Display. Unfortunately, it will not wake up once it goes to sleep.

Video showing the issue:

https://player.vimeo.com/video/695566328?h=a311f9d8f1

Problem persists under different conditions:

  • Am currently using the Mac Studio, but have also tried it with M1 MacBook Pro (13",2020) as well as a 2013 Mac Pro (using a thunderbolt adapter). The issue remains, regardless of the setup.
  • I have tried not putting my Mac into sleep at all, and instead just locking the screen. But eventually the display turns off, and when I need to use my computer, it doesn't turn on again.
  • Have tried different thunderbolt cables, both Apple-branded and non-Apple-branded
  • Have tried using the Studio Display in a single-display set up, as well as in a dual-display set up
  • Have tried on macOS Monterey 12.3.1 (latest update)

Current Workarounds (if you can call them that; it's a significant interruption to workflow to do this each time I need to resume working at the computer)

  • Restarting the computer entirely
  • Unplugging and re-plugging in the thunderbolt cable
  • (if using a 2nd monitor), logging in, manually setting the machine to sleep, and then waking it up again: 50% of the time, when re-waking the Studio Display may come on the second time if lucky.

I'm not alone in experiencing this issue. There appear to be other threads related to this issue, albeit with slightly different set ups described. The difference is that I've tested this problem with several different Mac setups (MacBook, Mac Pro, Mac Studio) and confirm it appears to be a larger issue.

Current System Specifications:

  • Clean MacOS Install: When I set up my Mac Studio, I set it up as a clean install - so there are no randomly corrupted preference files that could have been brought over via data migration.
  • MacOS Version: 12.3.1 (build 21E258) --> note: the issue existed on 12.3 (i.e. not a new issue introduced by the .1 update)
  • Mac Studio (M1 Max/24-core GPU/ 64GB/ 1TB) --> note: also tested with 2020 MBP + 2013 MP
  • Monitors: Studio Display + Dell U2720Q --> note: also tested as a single-display setup without the Dell monitor.
  • Connection: Thunderbolt. Have tried with several different cables, including the Apple cable that came with the Studio Display itself.

I've taken a lot of time to put this together, including the video. If anyone has a contact at Apple that could help escalate this issue, I (and others) would be very appreciative. I have also filed a report here: Feedback - Displays - Apple

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, I'm the original poster who made the video and started the thread, and I'd like to follow up with some information that might be helpful.

In my case, it's a confirmed hardware issue with the Studio Display monitor itself. The monitor is being repaired by Apple. They are replacing the logic board and thunderbolt ports. I went through 2 levels of tech support with Apple, and shared data from my system with the Apple engineering team. Also did the firmware update for the Studio Display when that came out. The whole thing has been quite an ordeal, so I'd like to share the info below to make it easier for others with the same issue.

How to confirm that you have the same issue

Testing Procedure: log in to your computer. Then put it to sleep via Apple Menu -> Sleep. Wait 2-3 mins. Then wake by clicking your mouse or pressing a key on your keyboard. Repeat this procedure 4-5 times as it can be intermittent. And make sure that you wait 2-3 minutes after sleeping before waking.

Testing Specifications

  • Test with just the single Studio Display monitor and your computer, without anything else connected (except mouse and keyboard). In other words, leave all other monitors or accessories disconnected.
  • Test with different thunderbolt cables to confirm it's not an issue with your cable.
  • Test the same monitor with different computers to confirm it's not an issue with your computer.

If you perform the testing procedure as above and the issue persists, then you may have the same hardware issue that I did. If that's the case, then your best bet is to get it repaired under the 1 year AppleCare Warranty. Get started on that sooner rather than later because it takes a lot of time to go through the process: calling AppleCare, getting a case number, taking it to your nearest Apple Store so the Genius Bar can confirm it in person, ordering the parts, bringing the monitor back home, waiting for the store to tell you that the parts have come in, taking the monitor back to the store, and waiting for them to actually perform the repair.

If you have a different monitor sleep/wake issue

If you do not have a Studio Display, but are having sleep/wake issues with your monitor then you have a different problem. If you try the steps above and can't get the issue to show up in each setup, then you have a different problem. If you have a different problem, please start a different thread instead of posting a reply to this one, because this only causes confusion for others.

Finally, if everyone could please mark this post as "Helpful" so the testing steps above can be shown more prominently to people who might also be having this issue. Thank you everyone who contributed and tried to help solve the problem.

I was having a similar issue and believe I have resolved it.

My setup:

Apple Studio Display (no other monitors connected)

2018 MacBook Pro in clamshell mode

Bluetooth Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse

Magsafe charger connected to one of the USB C ports on back of Studio Display (this was my only connected peripheral)

Solution:

I would notice that if the Mac had been sleeping for extended period of time (over night), I was not able to wake the clamshell laptop and Studio Display by tapping on the bluetooth keyboard or mouse. I would have to open the laptop and then disconnect/reconnect the included TB cable for the Studio Display to work. The problem with waking would not seem to happen if I manually sleep the mac and then immediately wake it with keyboard. It seemed to only occur after prolonged sleep.

The problem has been resolved after I disconnected (and never reconnected the Magsafe charger). I recall seeing some vague macOS notification (on the laptop screen) once when the problem occurred that a USB connection was drawing too much power or something. This gave me the idea to disconnect the Magsafe charger from the Studio Display. So perhaps try disconnected any peripherals from the Studio Display USB C ports, especially if they draw power, to see if that fixes the problem.

This issue persists for me and is occurring more frequently (now happening even after short period of computer sleep).

I finally contact Apple support today. On giving them the serial number of the display, they immediately told me "At this point your device needs to be serviced." I was given options to 1. mail it in, 2. Drop it off at Apple store, or 3. Be connected with a senior support to walk me through more advanced troubleshooting.

I opted for taking it to an Apple store and will be doing so today. I'll report back on anything I find out.

I found a solution that works for me. Like others, in deep sleep, monitor would not wake up *LG wide screen 5K, and I had to either reboot, or pull video cable out and in. Always in the morning this would happen for sure given he time in between. Last few days have been great and my monitor wakes up reliably.

My solution: System setting/ Displays/ advanced/ Energy: Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off (toggle off!)

My studio still seems to go to sleep along with the monitor and both wake up ok..

Jul 19, 2022 5:48 PM in response to TechnicallyInclined

Ok. So I took it in to Apple and they replaced the logic board and ports. Although it didn't fix the problem, it did change the frequency of the problem. It's intermittent now. But it will still happen 12-15 times a day. So I have to get up, move my desk away from the wall and unplug the cable and plug it back in...12-15 times a day.

Took it back into the Apple store and they're going to see if they can escalate this to engineering for a deeper look.

If you have a Studio Display with the same problem... please take it in to your nearest Apple Store. The more devices they can examine, the quicker we will get a proper fix. Maybe it's a manufacturing glitch that only happened in a small batch of devices. Or maybe it's a software issue. Or maybe it's a combination of both. Either way, I'd like a fix for this $2000 monitor.

So if you're having this issue, please take it in to Apple so they can have more data to work with. Will help them get to the root of the problem faster.

Same problem, but I found a semi-helpful work-around:

I have a new Mac Studio computer with an M1 Ultra chip, a Samsung Neo G9 monitor using the USB C connection to the computer, and an Apple extended wireless keyboard and Apple wireless trackpad. The only way I could wake the monitor sometimes was to unplug it from the Mac studio and re-plug it back in. I got an OWC hub and connected it to the computer (not an endorsement, it may be that any hub will work), and I plugged the monitor into the hub instead of directly into the Mac Studio computer. Now, when the monitor is asleep and I hit a key on the keyboard, the monitor wakes up just fine. The only caveat is that if the monitor starts showing the screensaver (before it goes completely to sleep), pressing a key on the keyboard doesn't wake up the computer. But, if I tap the trackpad while the screensaver is on, the monitor will wake up. Then when the monitor goes fully to sleep again (screensaver shuts off and screen becomes blank) pressing the spacebar on the keyboard will work again to wake up the monitor.

I wrote earlier about plugging the monitor into a USB hub instead of directly into the Mac Studio. It is still working for me. I press the keyboard and the monitor wakes up after a moment. I still have to tap the trackpad to get the monitor out of screen-saver mode, however. It would be interesting to see if anyone has had similar success using a hub instead of the OWC hub I am using.

I noticed another "feature" that might help. I have a "hot corner" that shuts off the monitor when I move the cursor into that corner. Move the cursor to the corner and the monitor shuts off. I have to remember when I do that because the keyboard might not wake the monitor then. I hit the keyboard, nothing happens, so I move my finger around on the trackpad in a manner that I hope is moving my cursor out of the "hot corner". Then I can hit the keyboard again and the monitor wakes up.

After further troubleshooting, I have found that by tapping the keyboard after the system goes to sleep wakes the system about 50% of the time. Moving the mouse never wakes the system. What is curious is that there is apparently some sort of signal being sent to the monitor because the monitor ALWAYS wakes up when moving the mouse or tapping the keyboard, however the computer does not wake up and the monitor goes back to sleep. I thought this may be a monitor issue so I tried waking the system up and then inputing the password in the blind to wake the computer, but it does not wake up. Only reliable way to wake it up is by a quick press of the power button (again, this always works and takes me to the login screen). Running Monterey 12.4 on a Mac Studio M1 Ultra, 64GB, LG HDR DQHD 49" monitor, wireless apple keyboard and mouse and connecting thru an Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable (came with the Mac Studio) to the monitor's USB-C input. I'm 99% convinced this is a problem with the Mac Studio.

I wrote earlier - just a reminder, I think this is a Monterey problem (or some MacOS issue). I have the same problem using a Mac Studio computer with M1 Ultra, but I have a Samsung monitor that wouldn't wake up. I attached the monitor to a hub and now when it is completely shut down, it will wake up with the Mac keyboard (wireless, extended Mac keyboard), but when it then goes into screensaver mode, the keyboard won't wake it up anymore. However, a tap on the trackpad will wake it from screensaver. But if I attach the samsung monitor directly to the computer, I can't wake it up without unplugging it and then plugging it back in, as most of you have noticed. So the problem isn't specific to the studio display. At least, not in my case.

Oct 21, 2022 6:48 AM in response to TechnicallyInclined

My workaround: unplug the thunderbolt cable after the computer goes into sleep and if the display does not turn on, plug it into another port on MacBook Pro.

I bought a magnetic thunderbolt adapter for it, so I can easily plug/unplug it, which is still terrible workaround compared to Studio display price tag, I know...

I have MacBook Pro 2020 with Magic Mouse and Bluetooth keyboard and connected to the Studio display only. The computer wakes up without a problem, but if I leave it plugged into the Studio display overnight, it is over 50% chance that next morning I need to change the thunderbolt port to which it is plugged in, otherwise the screen of Studio display will not turn on. The sound usually works and the MacBook's screen works as well, it just behaves like there is no external display.

I have also experienced a blinking screen couple of times and had to put computer into sleep mode again and wake it up once again without Studio display connected. Which brings me to conclusion, that issue could be rather related to MacBook/MacOS side.

Unplugging the Studio display has one more positive side effect - without unplugging the fans in it keep going all the time.

I love the picture, sound, microphones and camera quality of the Studio display, but I still can not believe we have to experience these very basic issues, especially with such a price tag...

Oct 21, 2022 7:49 AM in response to TechnicallyInclined

to get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• on invoking Option-(Detect Display) button in Displays preferences (from another display)

if the display misses the query upon wake-from long sleep, it may remain dark. Replugging the cable would be a solution, but some of the others on that list may be less intrusive.

Been having this same problem with my M1 Max studio, display will just not wake up some times. Unplugging USB-c cable and re-installing always works, sometimes a quick press on the power button does the job. Doesn't happen with my Macbook Pro (Intel processor) so pretty sure this is an M1 problem. Have just learned to live with it for months now. However, a few days ago I purchased a new Apple Magic Keyboard with touch ID and have not had a problem since, as long as I use the keyboard touch-ID. Still a roll of the dice to get the M1 to wake on mouse movement or just a key press. Touch-ID works every time.

I have a similar issue where, once the Mac Studio enters sleep mode, it will not wake up to either mouse or keyboard activity. I use an Apple Keyboard, Apple mouse and Apple Thunderbolt cable but use an LG display. I've used this same setup with my MacBook Pro (2016) and Mac Pro (2013) with no issues. All running the same MacOS Version.

The issue is only with my Mac Studio (M1 Ultra / 64GB / 2TB). The only way I am able to wake it is by a quick press on the power button, then it comes to life, no issue. Not a show stopper but somewhat aggravating.

Quick summary:

  • Make sure both ends of the Thunderbolt 4 cable are plugged into the Thunderbolt 4 port on the Mac Studio Display (there is only 1) and Mac Studio.
  • When it does not wake, try turning off your Magic Track Pad and Keyboard, then turning them back on. When they reconnect, see if it wakes up.
  • Try resetting the SMC and PRAM.
  • Try resetting your Bluetooth interface on your Mac Studio (option click on it in the menu bar) and re-pair your keyboard and mouse by cabling them.
