Studio Display Will Not Wake From Sleep

Love the Studio Display. Unfortunately, it will not wake up once it goes to sleep.

Video showing the issue:

https://player.vimeo.com/video/695566328?h=a311f9d8f1

Problem persists under different conditions:

  • Am currently using the Mac Studio, but have also tried it with M1 MacBook Pro (13",2020) as well as a 2013 Mac Pro (using a thunderbolt adapter). The issue remains, regardless of the setup.
  • I have tried not putting my Mac into sleep at all, and instead just locking the screen. But eventually the display turns off, and when I need to use my computer, it doesn't turn on again.
  • Have tried different thunderbolt cables, both Apple-branded and non-Apple-branded
  • Have tried using the Studio Display in a single-display set up, as well as in a dual-display set up
  • Have tried on macOS Monterey 12.3.1 (latest update)

Current Workarounds (if you can call them that; it's a significant interruption to workflow to do this each time I need to resume working at the computer)

  • Restarting the computer entirely
  • Unplugging and re-plugging in the thunderbolt cable
  • (if using a 2nd monitor), logging in, manually setting the machine to sleep, and then waking it up again: 50% of the time, when re-waking the Studio Display may come on the second time if lucky.

I'm not alone in experiencing this issue. There appear to be other threads related to this issue, albeit with slightly different set ups described. The difference is that I've tested this problem with several different Mac setups (MacBook, Mac Pro, Mac Studio) and confirm it appears to be a larger issue.

Current System Specifications:

  • Clean MacOS Install: When I set up my Mac Studio, I set it up as a clean install - so there are no randomly corrupted preference files that could have been brought over via data migration.
  • MacOS Version: 12.3.1 (build 21E258) --> note: the issue existed on 12.3 (i.e. not a new issue introduced by the .1 update)
  • Mac Studio (M1 Max/24-core GPU/ 64GB/ 1TB) --> note: also tested with 2020 MBP + 2013 MP
  • Monitors: Studio Display + Dell U2720Q --> note: also tested as a single-display setup without the Dell monitor.
  • Connection: Thunderbolt. Have tried with several different cables, including the Apple cable that came with the Studio Display itself.

I've taken a lot of time to put this together, including the video. If anyone has a contact at Apple that could help escalate this issue, I (and others) would be very appreciative. I have also filed a report here: Feedback - Displays - Apple

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, I'm the original poster who made the video and started the thread, and I'd like to follow up with some information that might be helpful.

In my case, it's a confirmed hardware issue with the Studio Display monitor itself. The monitor is being repaired by Apple. They are replacing the logic board and thunderbolt ports. I went through 2 levels of tech support with Apple, and shared data from my system with the Apple engineering team. Also did the firmware update for the Studio Display when that came out. The whole thing has been quite an ordeal, so I'd like to share the info below to make it easier for others with the same issue.

How to confirm that you have the same issue

Testing Procedure: log in to your computer. Then put it to sleep via Apple Menu -> Sleep. Wait 2-3 mins. Then wake by clicking your mouse or pressing a key on your keyboard. Repeat this procedure 4-5 times as it can be intermittent. And make sure that you wait 2-3 minutes after sleeping before waking.

Testing Specifications

  • Test with just the single Studio Display monitor and your computer, without anything else connected (except mouse and keyboard). In other words, leave all other monitors or accessories disconnected.
  • Test with different thunderbolt cables to confirm it's not an issue with your cable.
  • Test the same monitor with different computers to confirm it's not an issue with your computer.

If you perform the testing procedure as above and the issue persists, then you may have the same hardware issue that I did. If that's the case, then your best bet is to get it repaired under the 1 year AppleCare Warranty. Get started on that sooner rather than later because it takes a lot of time to go through the process: calling AppleCare, getting a case number, taking it to your nearest Apple Store so the Genius Bar can confirm it in person, ordering the parts, bringing the monitor back home, waiting for the store to tell you that the parts have come in, taking the monitor back to the store, and waiting for them to actually perform the repair.

If you have a different monitor sleep/wake issue

If you do not have a Studio Display, but are having sleep/wake issues with your monitor then you have a different problem. If you try the steps above and can't get the issue to show up in each setup, then you have a different problem. If you have a different problem, please start a different thread instead of posting a reply to this one, because this only causes confusion for others.

Finally, if everyone could please mark this post as "Helpful" so the testing steps above can be shown more prominently to people who might also be having this issue. Thank you everyone who contributed and tried to help solve the problem.

Interesting. I assume both displays have the issue when connected to the M1?

I just got off the phone with support and they had me delete the files starting with "com.apple.windowserver" in both:

[user]/library/ByHost/preferences

and

[computer]/library/preferences

There were a few such files in the User library location. Unsure if this has fixed anything since the issue usually occurs after extended sleep, but I'll report back. The next step I was given, if this doesn't work, is to try entering sleep from a fresh User account. After that I'll continue with support if nothing is solved.

So is this what you did?

For MacOS 12 Monetary, you got some relief by deleting two preferences files, then Restarting:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.<UUID>.plist   -OR possibly-

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.<UUID>.plist

-- where [~] tilde is an active abbreviation for "current user"

-- and <UUID> is a string of hexadecimal numbers unique to your system, grouped as 8-4-4-4-8 hexadecimal digits

Restart REQUIRED after these deletions (so that the System will re-create those plists in the correct form).

I may have hit on a super simple solution.

Set one of your Hot Corners to "Put Display to Sleep". I set mine for the lower right corner. Then, when my display won't wake up I just mouse down down down (to make sure the mouse is at the bottom) then right right right - and as soon as it hits the corner - boom - the screen comes on.

Works every time so far. 👍🏼

Same issue here. Started happening only recently, have had my macstudio for about one month now. Go away for several hours, come back, and I can't get the system to wake up. Am using a cabled Apple keyboard and bluetooth Apple mouse 2 with two non-apple displays. Tried unplugging and replugging in each individually, didn't help.

Today, after reading the above thread, I unplugged ALL of them, both displays and keyboard, replugged them in, and THEN the macstudio finally woke up.

Update: Booted into Recovery/Startup Options Mode, and I am currently reinstalling MacOS. Guess what, the display is still going to sleep without waking up. I can't even check the status of the MacOS reinstallation without unplugging the display cable and plugging it back into the Mac. At a minimum, this confirms it's not a third party software issue. Extremely frustrating.

I have a similar issue with a brand new Mac Studio M1 Max (base model), with latest update (Monterey 12.4) using USB-C (not thunderbolt) connexion to an ultra wide 21:9 LG 38 inch display (connected to the back of the Mac Studio). When leaving the computer going to sleep after a certain period of time the display won't come back from sleep. Computer seems to resume but display is not coming back. Un-plugging and re-pluging the usb-c cable is reestablishing the video feed instantaneously, but it's not a workflow that I want to use everytime. I temporarily activated 'prevent your Mac from automatically sleeping when display is off' and set 'turn display off' to 'Never' in order to see if it will happen again (so far, it's ok, but not convenient for energy saving and long-term lifetime of equipment)

Dear Technically Inclined:

I am wondering what your power settings are. I have had the same issue with my older late 2014 iMac with waking from sleep and since I used it for work, it would present quite a problem when I say returned from lunch and go to wake it up.

Maybe an option of never sleep would be more appropriate for your workflow?

I have a similar setup: Mac Studio with Studio Display (only one monitor) and it seems to work with the following settings:

I run no screen savers and when I leave my Mac Studio, I do not "put it to sleep", instead I press Control+Command+Q on the keyboard which locks the screen and it almost immediately goes black after doing that.

Sometimes however it does lock or go to sleep on its own. I never notice the power light on front slowly 'blinking' like it did with the MacBooks I've owned in the past so I am unsure as to whether my Mac Studio ever goes to sleep.

Another option may be to use Amphetamine (not free). But it can prevent your Mac from sleeping while a certain program is running or during certain hours, etc. I have found that to be a real time-saver for me.

I also try to never leave an app running 24/7 and will quit all of my programs when I am finished using my Mac. Just a habit for me - unless it is necessary to keep a particular app running. I would never say leave Safari running or Music or any other app unless I forget to quit the app.

I also restart once a week. Was thinking of trying to keep my Mac running for a month, just to see how it fares, but have been unsuccessful so far due to things changing and updates and had one crash where it restarted without warning over night.

It is usually fairly stable.

Hope this is helpful and though it may not be a solution you are looking for, might prove to be a work-around to the frustration as it sounds like you are doing work on your Mac and it is being interrupted.

Best regards,

Mark

I have the exact same issue.

New Mac Studio with 2 Studio Displays. Never happens with both monitors at the same time but happens almost daily with one or the the other. Unplug power, wait one minute, plug in, good to go. Software is up to date. No response from Apple. Major drain on my creative focus and productivity overall. I've owned Macs since 1986 and loved them all but, based on this experience, I will not buy another - certainly not for work.

It seems like the only way service will solve the issue is if they’ve fixed a hardware issue that has plagued new displays for months, because I purchased two brand new ones that both had the issue.

My “solution” was to return and settle for a $400 LG 27” 4K w/ p3 color and a Caldigit TS4. I may not have 5k resolution but I paid half the price and my monitors actually wake from sleep. I can’t believe how many issues the Studio Display has had. I will revisit Apple Displays when they release a mini LED display that hopefully doesn’t run an OS.

to get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive.

I didn't have the issue for a couple of weeks, then it happened again 2 days ago. I spent 5 minutes unplugging and replugging things. I have two monitors, one connected via the HDMI port, and the 2nd with a thunderbolt to DVI adapter. I also have an OWC expansion chassis (with its own separate power connection) connected via thunderbolt, with two additional drives, and I sometimes have other external drives connected via thunderbolt. I prefer not to unplug any of the external drives, because sometimes I have processes running on these (installs, etc.). Two days ago I gave up and unplugged the OWC and an external drive, plus everything else (both monitors, etc.), and the macstudio finally "came back" (began displaying on the main monitor so I could log in).

If the issue gets bad I'll consider changing the "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display setting", but I certainly don't want to do that if it might cause kernel panic reboots (as mentioned by snosek above...)
