Got a pair of AirPods 3 last week Thursday, it came with Firmware 4B66. Every method I've tried to update fails.
Is it better to leave the lid of the charging case open or closed? When the lid is closed, the AirPods lose connection with the phone.
Please help by describing your experiences or recommendations.

Did you try the update this way?
Put your AirPods into the case, close it, open it again and leave it open, so that the AirPods can connect to the iPhone.
Then connect the charging cable to the case, leaving the case open. The firmware update should start shortly after that.

I've read another suggestions, that charging your iPhone at the same time might help.
Other sources say, that the AirPod Pro update automatically at some point.
Yes my phone has always been plugged in each time i attempted the AirPods update
Not in that particular order, but i just did as you described.
will wait some 30 minutes hopefully for the process to complete and report back.
