If you have what I think. You only have two columns in mail . Your mail boxes and your sort by date column. If this is so, then move you mouse to the right edge and right click and hold. Now drag the mouse to the left. Nothing will happen till you get about half way across.

Suggest you to try safe mode for further troubleshooting.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

NoteSafe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

Mail is working normally now. It seems to have something to do with the

double lines at the bottom of message actually the center dot. I can't

reproduce the error. Clicking dbl lines lets you drag the (separator) up

& down the message list to reveal more or fewer messages but nothing

I can do hides the message preview as prev. my ginger came close with her

observation that adjusting the side view w/b desirable. Thank you both,

Tom
