THis update broke DRM content playing in Mirror from macbook

Mirror as a teacher often and all worked well when playing DRM content until this update was installed. This is on multiple Macbook Airs in our school. This is the only update that was applied and the only thing that changed. Now get blackscreen with sound only.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.3

I am also seeing this on multiple macbooks now I support. It is mirroring any DRM content (netflix, disney +, hbo max). I have two macbooks not updated that still work properly. It is when mirroring to any external device (have tried roku, tvs and appletv's) the drm content will just show black and sound only. Tried playing in safari or in chrome same results.

Like stated the computers not updated with this new driver package do not experience this issue. DRM content plays back fine with mirroring turned off.

This is only mirroring to one external source at a time from the macbook airs.

Any more information feel free to ask.

Hello eelongo,

To clarify, are you using AirPlay to wirelessly mirror your MacBook Air to a TV, or do you have an external monitor connected to your MacBook Air via a cable?

Does this occur with multiple TVs or external monitors?

Also, does this behavior happen with content from multiple sources?

Hopefully those details will help to isolate this behavior further, so we can take additional steps from there.

Take care.

Same problem type with some differences:

  • Affects multiple content from multiple sources. Have not yet been able to find content that is not affected.
  • (As soon as mirroring is enabled the video stops displaying on both the source Mac and receiving screens with audio continuing).
  • Affects all Macs tried as sources and Apple TV, Airplay emailed smart TVs and other Macs as destination screens.
  • Affects all Macs and all content types tried.
  • Did not present last week running 12.2.
  • Discovered today while running 12.2 and continued after update to 12.3.1.

It is possible a large number of content providers across the world have suddenly decided to block AirPlay of video only, while still allowing the audio channel, all at the same time. Stranger things have happened, bit not often.

However, it seems a lot more likely this is an Apple created problem in AirPlay handling video streams.
