Red RD3 files black on import with audio

Hi everyone,

This is my first time working with RD3 files and after importing them into Final Cut the image shows up as black with functioning audio. I've been looking through the forums for a solution and can see this sort of problem happens often, though i've not found a solution.

Specs

Mac Book Pro 12.0.1

Final Cut Pro 10.6.1

So far i've...

  • Restated Final Cut
  • Restarted my computer
  • Reset Final Cut preferences
  • i'm currently updating the operations system

I'm really stumped by this, when importing directly form FCP the image will show in the window for the first clip but anything beyond that is black. Perhaps I don't have enough space? Open to any suggestions!

Do you have the appropriate plugin?

Here are a few more things:

create a new library, import some RED clips; any difference?

delete and reinstall FCP; any difference?

if the problem remains: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

There could be other issues and the report could help us find them.

By the way: do you have Chrome?

Hi Luis,

I've tried another library and no difference there. Deleting FCP would be the next step though i've found a really awkward run around...

Downloading DaVinci Resolve, the files work fine there but due to the client I have to work using FCP. So i'm able to export the RD3 files separately into ProRes 4444, then back into FCP to make new proxies. It's super backwards but for now it seems like my best option. I'll continue having a play and look into Etrecheck also.

I use Chrome yes, would that cause any issues?

Chrome and its evil keystone daemons are poisonous to video applications like FCP.

See https://chromeisbad.com for an explanation.

I recommend that you uninstall Chrome and the keystone daemons (see the site above for how), then delete and reinstall FCP.

If you need stuff that is made for Chrome, try other Chrome based browsers like Brave, Edge or Opera. These do not use the keystone things that cause so much trouble.

Hi Luis,

Since yesterday I've...

  • restarted FCP and the computer a few more times
  • deleted and reinstalled FCP
  • deleted crome
  • tried different libraries

I'm still running the same issue with no image, though there was a moment where I could see the thumbnail of one of the videos when I was trying a test library. The image only stayed for a short while as the moment I moused over it the image went to black, do you think that could mean anything?

Below you'll find the Etrecheck report...

Hope that helps!
