Mail on iPhone 12 - Original sender not in reply after message was forwarded to other email address.

Hi all!

Am I the only one facing this problem :

When a received email is forwarded to someone else and I want thereafter to answer the original sender, only the person I forwarded the message to is taken into account, including the message used in the forwarded message.

Even though I am now answering the email directly from the Inbox without changing anything from the original content. Just by clicking on reply.

Can someone help?

Thanks and have a great day without iPhone's problem

I think I kind of know what you are seeing.. I believe the problem is how the emails are combined into one 'thread'. If you use the reply arrow that is docked at the very bottom of the screen, you are acting on the most recent email in that thread.. which is likely the one that you forwarded.

If you go to one of these threads, you should be able to scroll down and see your original email, and then the forwarded one.

As you scroll down, at the bottom of the original email, you'll see a smaller reply arrow. If you want to respond to an email that's 'earlier' in the thread, then you should use that smaller reply arrow

Hey there Sergiobello,

You'd done a lot of great troubleshooting by trying to narrow down this issue, and get it resolved.

We'd suggest the following:

  1. Update your iOS software. You'd want to make sure to have a backup first, then test it out.
  2. Make sure you have a strong internet connection. If needed, change connections then test.
  3. In one of the accounts, go to the account website and you'd want to use the exact same email to see if you're able to reply. We're suggesting to rule out any account or specific the email. You might need to contact the email service provider.

We've found some of these suggestions in If you can’t send email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. It looks like this might be more specific to your device.

If this is still not working and we've ruled out the email service providers, Contact Apple Support. They'd be able to work with you and find out why you're unable to hit Reply.

Kind regards to you.

Welcome Sergiobello,

It sounds like you're having problems replying to the original sender of messages you have forwarded to other contacts.

Let's be sure to follow Reply to email in Mail on iPhone when replying to the original message.

  • "Tap in the email, tap the More Actions button, then tap Reply.
  • Type your response."

Being sure to tap Reply on the original message, not the forwarded message.

Best wishes!

Sergiobello,

Unless forwarded to yourself, the email you are forwarding shouldn't be in your Inbox, but in your Sent folder.

To clarify, you are going to your Inbox and tapping on the email that was originally received before forwarding, and then tapping reply?

If so, does this happen with all emails you forward after receiving, or just those from specific contacts?

Take care.

Hi,

I am working from All Inboxes (meaning i have more than one) and when replying it is mentioned above in a light grey color and a white background "i.e. Found in Sergio Home Inbox". I select the email I want to reply to and it mentions not the sender's email address but the contact I forwarded the message to.

So, yes, I just did another try with a new email I received today and forwarded it to myself then went back to the inbox selected the original email, clicked on it and clicked reply: the To: was myself not the original sender.

Best

Serge
