Swipe up on watch shows an icon for theatre mode. It also shows a crescent moon icon for focus, under which is movies. What, if anything, is the difference and when would I use one over the other?

There is no icon for "movies." Use Control Center on your Apple Watch explains:
Turn Theater Mode, or Theatre Mode, on or off. This setting turns on Silent Mode, and the screen stays dark until you tap or press a button.
Turn Do Not Disturb on or off. Learn about Do Not Disturb.
Thank fieryjack. I found both of your links very funny. Looks like Power Off is my only option for Theatre Mode on the iPhone — and that's probably not a bad thing. :-)
The crescent moon used to be called "do not disturb"
Do Not Disturb mode turns off all alerts (except for alarms and heart rate notifications).
Theatre Mode enables Silent Mode and also prevents your Apple Watch display from waking when you raise your wrist (with that setting enabled).

If I turn on Theater Mode on my Series 6, I do not see Focus turned on with Movie under it. Had you configured a Focus for Movie? I've used Theater Mode in the past and it works well while in the theater. I don't know that there would be a difference in the two. Did you check your Focus settings on the iPhone to see if a Movie Focus was created?

On the connected iPhone I cannot find a Theatre mode. Under Focus, there is a Movies option just like on the Watch. My aged memory tells me that I may well have created a Movies Focus on my phone in the past and it has been copied to the watch. Again, from memory, I think I did that to try to totally silence the phone when I was in a theatre. I found that the Do Not Disturb Focus still let alarms through. When in a theatre, I want it to not light up nor make a sound but that seems difficult to do, without turning it off. The watch has both Theatre Mode and Do Not Disturb Focus so they must be different.
It's interesting that the watch comes with a Theatre Mode but the iPhone doesn't — or I just can't find it.
