No Dolby Atmos over Apple TV App on Andoid TV (Philips OLED+Denon AVR)

I’m watching my Apple TV+ subscription over the built in Apple TV app on Android TV Philips OLED806 + Denon AVC-X4700H Atmos capable receiver. Dolby Vision works, but Atmos sound doesn’t (although the ATV+ content has it). I only get Dolby Digital signal to my Denon AV Receiver and the TV doesn’t display the Dolby Atmos badge when playback starts (like over other apps).

This problem is specific only to the Apple TV app. All the other streaming apps running on the same TV send Dolby Atmos signal without any problems to the AV receiver.

There are no options in the ATV app itself, where I could enable Atmos or change any sound output settings.

Therefore I would like to know if there is anything left I can do, or must Apple fix it’s app first?

My system is fully updated and running the latest version FW & SW.

I managed to pin down the problem. It looks like the latest app update broke Dolby Atmos (I was actually pretty sure it used to work before, but couldn’t say with 100% certainty, since There isn’t that much to watch on ATV+).

I managed to downgrade the Apple TV app to the previous version and now it’s working again with Dolby Atmos sound.

Working version with Dolby Atmos (& Vision)

Version 9.0.0.9A108:10.0.0 (android-9A108):apple

Media Engine: 2.15.20:15.0.0

Model: 2021/22 Philips UHD Android TV

Firmware Version: QTG3.200913.0011938

OS Information: Android 10

Latest version (update released end of march), non-working Dolby Atmos:

Version 10.0.0.11A104:11.0.0 (android-11A104) :apple

Media Engine 2.160.10:15.0.0

Model 2021/22 Philips UHD Android TV

Firmware Version QTG3.200913.0011938

OS Information Android 10

I hope a future update will fix this. For now I’m sticking with the old version and I’m turning off the auto-update feature.

Hi,

you don’t need to do a factory reset.

  1. in the TV roll back the Apple TV app to the factory installed version > settings (on remote) > manage apps > Apple TV > roll back to version 4.0 > test it now runs Atmos.

  1. go to Android home > go to Google Play Store ‘get more apps & games’ > click your profile icon > click manage apps and games > go to auto update > (you can turn off all app updates here) > or, go to ‘on this device’ > go to Apple TV app and kill updates.

I gave up speaking to Philips about this as they don’t get it and wanted me to spend my time investigating it for them as a tester - downloading logs blah blah. They need to get a grip, they have all the relevant info and should sort it themselves - but the root cause looks to be a Apple TV / Android platform conflict

Same here - new Philips MINI LED 75 Inch Android TV platform. The only solution is to roll back to the factory installed version of AppleTV if you want Atmos. Frustratingly the App keeps updating itself with each power cycle.

informed Philips. Suggested firmware update to latest. This doesn’t work. Think it’s an Apple issue, possible related to Apple + Android on Philips sets.

I’m not sure if the app functionality is the same on every platform where it is available. It should offer the best quality that the device(s) support.

The Apple TV app is designed to take audio settings from the device itself, so it doesn’t have nor need in-app settings for that.

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately the Apple TV app in my case doesn’t correctly choose the best compatible audio setting.

As already mentioned, other apps on my TV play Dolby Atmos, which I can clearly see as a Dolby Atmos badge appears on the TV screen when playback starts and also my Denon AV receiver displays Dobly Atmos on its display.

Only with Apple TV App there is no Atmos sound output to my receiver.

Posting some pictures as proof.

  • The mentioned Dolby Atmos badge notification in TV sound settings.

  • ATV+ content Ted Lasso with Dolby Atmos sound
  • Dolby Vision works, but Amos doesn’t, clearly seen also on the AV receiver.

Netflix movie example, different app, same TV and AV Receiver, Dolby Amtos works flawlessly:

Clearly the Apple TV app has a bug.
